Default speedometer seal

For the life of me, I can't remember whether the open side of the small seal that goes around the speedometer driven gear (TH400) faces in (towards the transmission) or out (toward the retaining ring/speedometer cable).

That is the flimsy seal. open side faces inward. I think. Going from memory.

Should be a c-wire clip that pushes against the seal, kinda locks the seal in place.

Yeah I was thinking that since it’s a lip seal, the lip should be on the oil side. But in the back of my mind I remember needing to do something counterintuitive when I replaced the last one years ago. Someone must know for sure.

Lip seals that retain fluid always have the lip face the fluid. Seals that are meant to keep dirt out always have the lip face the dirt/contamination. In this case, you're keeping fluid in. The lip goes in.
