blown 871 stock block choice
ive been trying to use up all my older parts before buying stuff for my ia2 block...my dilema has been 1 400 block was bad and other block may need bored bigger than the pistons i had for the cracked block.
new dilemna, i currently have 1 block at machine shop, with forged 4" stroke crank, bme rods, and icon .03 pistons. was told that one may need to be .040 because of rust. im picking up a standard bore block today so i could keep going and save the other block for another day. i also just got a 428 4 bolt main block and crank. looks like it machined .040 and crank turned, greased and stored....was hoping i coulda used my icons in but the .040 killed that what would be a better build for 871 428 "434" block with studded mains, bme rods, new ross pistons, n crank 406, n crank bme rods, ross pistons studded 2 bolt main 400 "434" block forged crank bme rods, icon pistons, may buy ross if you guys think theres a huge difference. also studded 2 bolt obviously theres a bennefit to the crank but honestly i dont think the crank will be the weak link in a stock block build and considered shelving it for the turbod ia2

I use a 412 CI 60-over 400 3.75 stroke steel rods and pistons Icon
I think with 8-71 blower, just bumped up the cam in it hoping for more power. any of your combo's would do the job. I went the 400 route to make more boost easier. GT |

i went with the 400 crank, bme rods, ross pistons, i think it will be easier to make more boost with less work on the 400. hopefully it all lives lol.

you didn't mention application but, the strongest production Pontiac blocks were all cast for the 1958 to early 1960 model year. Pontiac took out a lot of weight in the blocks ( they even advertised it ) for the 1961 model year.
If wanting to use a 3" main, then all 1959 and many 1960 blocks are your best choise. Most can easily go +.125" but, no need to go crazy on bore with a blown deal. All later parts fit. it has the side mounts. You will need to decide what to do to mount a starter but, that is small potatos for us hot rodders. 20 years ago, my 59 389 block went 6.77 at 200mph on a part pass on a load of 92% nitro, 6-71 and Enderles. these are overlooked great blocks for high horsepower. Of course, these blocks are no longer plentiful but, they are out there and avail. And no one wants them so, most are pretty cheap. Best to you. Pontiac Heaven
