hiding a 871 under the hood ...65 gto
i coukd have swore i seen a youtube vid of a guy with an 871 under his gto hood...cant find it...anyone tried to get one to fit under a 65 with 4inch cowl..?

There's this X 400 showcar built to fit under the hood of a 63 GP. It would be a challenge to use 4 sidedraft carbs on a custom built intake to fit the top of a GMC blower. The throttle linkage would be a challenge for sure, but it fits under the stock hood. I believe that blower is a 671, but the snout could be shorter to fit an 871. Notice 7, V belts to drive the blower instead of a cogged belt.
If you wanted a blower under the hood, and were willing to use a Magnuson, or Whipple style blower, and went with electronic FI, it shrinks the package down considerably. This is a 2004-06 late model LS GTO with a Magnuson blower that fits easily under a stock hood. it's not an 871, but it's in a package that is much easier to fit under a stock hood. I didn't find any 65 GTOs with a 871 blower under even a 4 inch bubbled hood when I searched the net. That big chunk of aluminum is going to be difficult to disguise under most any hood after the late 50s cars. I've seen 55-57 chevys with a blower under the hood, but the hood is quite a bit higher than a GTO hood. |

Put a flat hood on your car and cut a big hole in it.
Show your 8-71 to the world, that’s the right way.

My hobby cars are all used in fair weather, none get driven in the rain whether or not there’s a blower sticking out of the hood.
That’s what my late model modern cars are for, I’d rather one of those get in an accident on a slick road than one of my old cars I have invested a lot of time and money. There are guys who drive old hot rods in every kind of weather with the engine completely exposed so it’s not like you can’t drive in the rain. So as long as you don’t mind the cleaning afterwards have at it. There are dozens of ways to add boost that will package nicely under the hood but a GMC 8-71 roots blower really isn’t one of them. They’re traditionally exposed through a hole in the hood, pretty much meant for displaying as it should be.

I went with EFI and the BDS intake and fit my 8-71 under the hood. A 4 inch cowl would hide the bug catcher also.

A newer TVS 2300/2650 blower would probably come close to fitting if someone had the time/money/energy to either get a manifold cast or sheet metal one made. Would make a crap load more power and have cooler air temps too. A few of us were going to approach Harrop Engineering in Australia as they are now making manifolds for new blowers to go on conventional V8's like SBC/BBC atm. I heard a Pontiac manifold has come up in discussions with their R&D dept, but not sure if it was green lit.
