Is this a farmer fix?
I've been helping a guy with a '58 Pontiac troubleshoot his fuel gauge that always reads empty. After I got him to remove the wire at the sending unit and the gauge finally read full I told him to remove the sending unit and check it with an ohm meter at empty, half and full. It read correctly, but the "float" was made from cork. I'm guessing the float was saturated with gas and has sunk, always reading empty.
Did Pontiac use cork floats in the '58 gas tanks or is this a rather amateur attempt at a fix?

It should have sort of a clear sealer over the cork,
I've never seen a square one most are round but it sure could be correct.

I had to replace the float on my '58 wagon. It was square cork. Saturated. I cut a segment off of another sender for something I had lying around it's worked great since. Good thing too as the wagon ones are different shaped and hard to find.
