Default 6X exhaust side rework

Hi all!
I member of the board here has asked me for some guidance in porting up his 6X heads over the winter and I figured I would share with everyone as we roll along thru this process.

I want to start him on the Exh side because it's rather easy as compared to the Intake side work depending on how much of a flow gain is looked for/ needed.

I started here with a as run center Exh port all carboned up and rusty as would be on a stock motor your running.

I am testing here with the stock 1.66" Exh valve.

In the first photo is the stock dirty Exh port , but I found that I had to block off the Exh crossover with clay due to bad turbulence at around .100" lift.
It's good to make note that this lift point is very important in the blow down phase of the start to the Exh cycle.

My first list of flow numbers is stock and the second is just after about 4 minutes of clean out work with a 80 grit straight sanding roll.

The factory machine lip on the short turn for the most part was removed and the upper short turn radius was cleaned out with a tapered 80 grit roll mounted on the mandrill backwards to make getting around the top of the short turn easier.

There is a 9% flow gain at .550" just from the clean up work.

It's interesting Ali's to note that just with the clean up the Exh flow once you get to .450" lift is very close to that of a Exh port with a 1.77" valve!

I bet this makes you wonder how much your carboned up rusty Exh Manifolds are choking off you motor!

------stock---- cleaned up.
.050" 22.6. 23

Note that this post I will make is a bit of a set up!

I did more work over the weekend on this 6X center Exh port, like 20 minutes more grinding work.

The width on the floor of this port at the apex / crown of the short turn is 1.242" and necks down to 1.080" just before the Exh flange .

This whole outer wall I ground open / wider by .040" to end up at 1.a width at the flange of 1.120". This you can see in my photo.

I also ground out the out bound side the the divit on the roof at the pinch point and on the top of the short turn I blended in the casting nob that's there on its reviving side from the bowl.
Again see my photos.

The first stack of numbers is after my port clean out as listed in my first posting on this Exh port.

The second column is the flow test results after my 20 additional minutes of grinding.

.050". 23. 22.2

.100". 47. 46.7

.200". 94.6. 93.3

300". 130. 129

.400". 149.9. 150.5

.450. 155.8. 155.4

.500". 158.7. 158.4

550". 162.7. 159.4

.600". 163.6. 161.3

650". 163.6. 163.6

Question, so where are the nice flow gains that should have taken place with 20 minutes of grinding time invested?

Note that with any kind of A/B back to back flow testing that if your flow results are within 1.5 cfm of each other, then they are the same in term of repeatable accuracy.

I will have some time tomorrow to do some more rework and at least get one more flow test posted.

On your time.

I've read the Jim Hand book. Read the HO Racing book. Watched the McCarthy video. I have my porting templates all ready to go along with my snap gauges, calipers, homemade Dr. Air E tool etc. I've played around with a scrap 7K3 head to get a feel for the pace of material removal, but next step is to start the work on the 6X-4 heads that will be used for my build.

Yes, if your maximum porting a set of iron heads by hand your literally removing pounds of material, and that's a job that takes time!!

Can you define or point out where the port crown is in this pic? https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...Port_parts.GIF

In the port reference picture you posted that port floor has no crown / high point.

In this picture of the cut away of a 6X exh port the crown of the short turn is at the peak / high point where the floor begins to turn down .

Hi Steve25: I have a question. See post #2 and first picture of three. You mention, "The width on the floor of this port at the apex / crown of the short turn is 1.242" and necks down to 1.080" just before the Exh flange. This whole outer wall I ground open / wider by .040" to end up at 1.a width at the flange of 1.120". This you can see in my photo."

Can you tell me if my measurement technique is correct? I am trying to measure the floor width at the apex/crown of the short turn. I placed the snap gauge between the two floor walls of the center port at the smallest portion. The snap gauge measurement points were aligned with exhaust flange bolt hole. This gave me the floor width from floor wall to floor wall. My number is 1.24". The width at the flange is 1.12" These numbers indicate my 6x head has already had some porting performed and I won't repeat this step. BT

That width dimension you have is good for now, but may need to go wider.
I have done more work on my Mule port, but have not had time to take new pictures and make a up date post in this string.
I will try and do such tomorrow.

After a bout with Covid, I'm back to almost normal (well, normal for me). Was laid up for most all of November. Was able to get the heads into a shop on Friday. With the wait time, probably won't see till late January.

Still following the thread to get my ducks in a row for starting the work when the heads come back from the machine shop.

Good to hear your back to near normal!
I had it back at the start of this year and it takes a while to fully recover from, like months of the sense of smell being only 60 % of what it was.

Anyway I will post up more info , flow test and photos this weekend that you can reference when you get back to it.
