8 lugs
I know that the drums changed in 1963 so the wheels had to change too. Will 1960-1962 trim rings fit the 1963 up wheels? What shade of silver are the early wheels? I believe the wheels and drums that I have are 1963's. The drums are unpainted aluminum color and have left and right threads. The center caps are the 1963-1964 type. The wheels are black but could have been repainted and there was 1 large trim ring. I am planning on installing them on a 1962 and need 2 rear drums. I don't care about correctness I just want 4 matching drums. Am I correct in assuming that 1963 up rear drums will match? Thanks.

I think this old Smoke Signals article from the 1990s is still the best online reference for the how 8 lugs changed over the years. http://www.teufert.net/pontiac/8lug/8lug.htm
As far as I know, either style trim ring will fit any of the wheels. I'm not sure if the silver color of the early drums has ever been conclusively determined, I personally just bead blasted them and left them bare aluminum - I did file the edges of the fins and then sanded them with 400 grit sandpaper to polish them up. I think the rear drums fit all years, the difference is if they were black or not, along with the length of the fins. |

The fins are shorter on the 1960 and 1961 Aluminum wheels.
I believe the pre 1964 drums were bare metal . All rims early and later will fit all drums as well as center caps and trim rings. I believe 1963 was the last year of right and left threads. |

Anyone know what color the 1962 wheels are?

The brake drums or the rims? The rims are silver - the link I posted earlier has the color recipe, although I painted mine with Krylon Dull Silver and I think they look pretty accurate.

The car is a "driver" so dull silver is close enough. Thanks.
