Today I started on the next issue with the 4dr: turn signal turns itself on (left turn) every time I hit a bump. So I start looking in earnest for my spare turn-signal switch.

I've been digging around while looking for my spare water pumps and keeping an eye out for turn signals but not finding any. So today I really dig in and what's the first thing I find? a box marked "Tempest Water Pumps"! sure enough... GM NOS 8-bolt and 4-bolt pumps in the box.

Time to do a complete inventory. If done nonstop you might get done when, 2015? I'm in the same boat.

That water pump gave up on me on Friday. It went from a drip to a gusher. I dug out the box of spares and found that my NOS spare was garbage! The shaft seal on the front of the pump was not seated. I pressed off the impeller and broke it in half. Then I tried to press the seal in where it should be and destroyed that. So the car is dead in the water for now.

At this point I'm going to put in a V-8 pump if I can find one. Going to try NAPA.

Does anybody know what car I should tell them I'm getting it for so I don't get the blank stare when I say '63 Tempest .

(I have 8-bolt pumps and covers but would rather fight than switch.)

Tell them 61 Catalina with a 389 motor, 4 bolt pump.

Clockwise or counter clockwise? sheesh nothing is ever simple. I know the answer is clockwise. but then I thought about the water pump discussion elsewhere in this forum that said that a reverse impeller is a myth so could that be what they are talking about? and since the counter clockwise version is half the price of the clockwise one (rock-auto) are they nuts talking about a counter-clockwise Catalina water pump or did the Catalina have a CCW set-up too?

Gary, thanks, will keep it in mind....

I ordered one (can you guess which one!?) better keep that V-8 one of yours in the trunk spare parts bin for that trek to Norwalk. For roadside repairs, I like the simplicity of the 4-bolt style over the 8-bolt.

Default Is this thing any good???

The pump came today and it looks like the one I had that had the shaft seal not seated. Or am I nuts?

In the picture below, you can see a rubber part sticking out, looks like it's doing nothing (with a line of glue around it also doing nothing) and behind it you can see a shiny part, that's a spring.

It looks suspiciously like the 4cyl pump that I thought was NG. (On that one the spring was even more visible because there is more empty space there on the 4cyl pumps).

Should that spring be pushing the rubber washer against the underside of the impeller? If so it's unlike any of the (used) original pumps that I compared it to. or should that rubber and spring be seated in the housing?

(also in the box with the pump was a new gasket that got destroyed by rattling around loose in a box with a water pump.)

I'm going to install it now and see what happens so I guess I'll get the answer to this question soon enough.

Well I put it in and it's not leaking so I guess that's the way they are supposed to look. Live & learn.
