63 V8 Engine Mount stands
About to commence with my conversion from 4 banger to 455. I would rather not have to create home brewed motor mounts or go to solid mounts.
I would like to cut off the 4 cyl stands from the cross member and weld in the V8 stands. The cost to buy & ship a V8 cross member is too expensive. Anyone have a 63 V8 Cross member they could part out (i.e. cut stands off or section it into the smaller pieces that have stands connected)? Any leads would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Todd |

Building your own is a good option. I wouldn't hack an original v8 x-member, but am willing to build a set of mount stands.

Are those crossmembers different also or just the stands. I had to make my own for the 61-not all that hard to do.

which crossmember?

Since you are starting from scratch using a 455 motor (and presumably headers or long branch manifolds) decide what type motor mounts you are going to use, mount them to the block, cut the 4 cyl towers off, set the motor with an oil pan and exhaust manifolds on it into the crossmember , get your measurements and fabricate the towers/pads for welding onto the crossmember. Since the crossmember is very easy to remove from the car, working on it fitting up the V8 can be done fairly easily in the floor of your garage if you have a hoist or engine lift to help with the lifting. I have a posting in this forum dated February 5, 2010 detailing the alignment measurements concerning the supposed "offset" of these 4 cyl engines. I basically found out that the 4cyl and V8 engines in the 63 cars are both virtually on centerline of the cars. I assume that goes for the earlier cars too. P.S. You can use the existing 4cyl towers for mounting your V8 by fabricating motor mounts out of pieces of angle iron. I did that and used some 1" thick hard rubber for cushioning action. |

Biscuit style mounts are an option that can be used with 4 cyl towers. They are common amongst hot rodders and there are several styles to choose from. You'd probably have to fab an engine side braket as any hot rod Pontiac biscuit kit is likely to have a different tower mount centerline. Don't know till you try.

Crossmembers are the same, the stands are different.
