Default Headder bolts

I spent 5 hours last ningt putting the gaskets between the engine heads and the exhaust headders. Most of that time was on the @@#%^^&&*!!!! rear center bolt on each side. Gonna make a special wrench for them.

I use this kind of bolt on my hedders. No issues what so ever. Only thing I did was to shorten the end of the allen wrench a little bit!!

That would not work for the location. Headman shorty headers. Guys did not want the headers tightened down until the engine/trans was in the car. The bolt is captive between the pipe and the flange. No go for a socket, rachet box, or a normal box. Drivers side the steering column shaft blocks the side access. Did it from under the car 1/12 of a turn at a time with a short open end wrench. Going to get the longest straight combination box/open end. Grind it thin both ways, then bend it at about 1.5 inches from the box end 45 degrees.

I like 12 points-But have to use hex in the center and have the bolts in the holes before installing. Have a custom made hex wrench also. Make sure your bolts are not too long and bottom out before going tight against the flange . On a couple restorations the headers were on the engine in the front crossmember engine cradle and just lowered the body down over every thing-put in the six bolts and bolted up the trans-crossmember. I used Hooker 68 GTO D-ports. Fit Great

That one can be a little tough. I use an older style small integrated washer hex bolt. This is my 462 in my truck and it does get a little rough at times. My long Mac knuckle saver box end wrench works the best, and I do have to access from underneath.

The best and only way to do this and make it a lot easier is,
Test fit your headers on an engine stand. Nothing is in your
way and you can dimple the tubes a little and test with a
wrengh boxed or opened end. I won't install headers without
doing this first. It's just to hard trying to fit a new set of
headers for the first time in the car. Hope this helps in this
situation as every one knows what a pain headers are to install.

They do make a header bolt with a 3/8 head on it also.
Theres a lot more room using a 3/8's wrengh compared
to a 7/16 wrengh.
