My 70 Judge is missing it's rear axle and I'm trying to find out what originally came under it. My window sticker lists as an option Safe-T-track code 361 for $42.13. My build sheet lists code G90 positraction axle.

I was under the impression I needed a XH code 3:55 posi for my 4 speed Judge but I'm not sure what the codes on my window sticker and build sheet call for. Any help is appreciated.

Sales code #361 Safe-T-Track Rear Axle is the same as RPO code G80 Positraction.

RPO G90 or sales code #368 would be a Performance Axle Ratio.

The two letter axle ratio code will be found in box #29 on your original build sheet.

The 3.55:1 XH Safe-T-Track is common/std on Judges with the #348 RamAir III engine.

Also, what is the tranny? A M-21 Muncie could be for a 3.90 gear. A M-20 Muncie is probably the 3.55 as said by Kenth.

The trans is an M20. I checked box 29 on my build sheet and it's XH. Thanks for the help. Was the 3:55 open rear end standard on the Judge and the $42.13 option for posi? I also read on this forum about the nodular rear end. Was that another option?

The open 8.2 Pontiac rear was standard in a 389 or 400 powered GTO.

Clicking off the Safe-T-Track option in the lower ratio gear selections, you received the Nodular iron center housing, that was def the case in '67, '68, & 69. I've had multiple N housing original 3.55 Safe-T-Tracks for all 3 model years.

'70 models, ive read the coded designation of a light duty 3.55 STT. Have yet to examine one. I have a local customer (original owner) with the N housing 3.55 Safe-T-Track in his '70. Its an original 4 pinion STT carrier, but the axles are standard duty axles. I've had a similar very original '71 3.55 STT that also had the std duty axles.

The $63 & change billed HD Safe-T-Track 10 bolt was the 3.90 or 4.33 ratio STT rearend & required HD Cooling (4 core radiator). 3.90's were rarely offered in the last model year, the '71 model Pontiac A-body's. occasionally behind the '71 model L78 400, the 71's so built, that I've documented had the M22 transmission.

On A, F and G 69-70 cars Safe-T-Track was billed at $42.13 with axles up to (numerically) 3.23. Above that (3.36 and up) it was billed at $63.19 and labelled HD (but the same option code). At 3.90 and higher (numerically) you had to have Safe-T-Track and it was billed as HD. The exception is the 455 cars with a 12 bolt, all STT's in these applications were billed at $42.13. While you could order as numerically low as 3.08 on some base engine GTO on 1970 Judges and other RA3 cars you could only special order up (numerically)... ie. 3.90 or 4.33.

Returning to the original post of the thread, all 1970 400 and 400 RA GTO and Judge engines had 3.55 as the standard ratio regardless of transmission (except M21 of course) unless you had AC. So your M20 RA3 Judge (assuming you don't have an optional ratio noted on the PHS) would have had a 3.55 STT XH or if your car has AC, the 3.23 STT XF rear end.
