Default '66 or '67 GTO, which do you like best?

Which one do you like best?

We're only choosing between the '66 and '67 GTOs here.

Give your reasons if you like, but be sure to vote!

I actually like the 65 the most but since you limited your poll to 66-67 I went with 67 because I have one! Why did you limit the choices?

1967:
Love the grills, tail lights, opportunity to get a T400 & a Hurst Dual Gate in automatics, standard steering wheel, Rally II's, and even the vertical piping on the seats....Not to mention I was born that year.

Would love a hardtop in Burgundy or Tyrol Blue.

That, and dual master cylinder.

Me too!!!

I like the '66 just a little better. Primarily because my dad had one new (See pic from '66). It was a 4-barrel, 4-speed, 3.89 gears (iirc)). No power anything. Dad said it just cost HP and made it heavier lol. My dad also had a '64 new. It was black with red interior. Same 4-barrel, 4-speed, 3.89 gears. I like '66 louvered tail lights. I like the wide '67 rocker molding, Q-jet, 400 turbo, H&H shifter, wire grill.

That's my dad and grandpa in the pic btw.

Because the focus of this sub-forum is on '66 & '67 cars.

There's another poll in the '64 & '65 forum as well.

love the 66 tail lights and rear eye brows, but must vote 67.

The 67 mesh grills with eye brows, the availability of the TH400 trans, the Rally 2's, the 3 spoke steering wheel, and the vertical stitching on the seats, all favour 67.

I don't know how many responding have owned both, but I have. They are the only year GTOs I have owned & are my #1 & #2 favorites without a doubt. Both years have strengths and weaknesses. The '66s strengths are as follows. Last year for the Tri-Power & the 389. You gotta love a 389 Tri-Power. The rear end on the car is gorgeous, I love everything about it, especially the louvered tail lights. The real wood dash. The full dash pad. The metal window crank knobs. I know the next two items are a matter of personal taste so let me just say that I personally think that both the rocker panel chrome & the overall front end look better on the '66. As far as the weaknesses go, The two speed automatic stinks. No disk brake option & that's about it. The '67s strengths are first & foremost, the Turbo 400 with the dual gate. Available disk brakes. The 400 has 11 more cubic inches and better flowing heads than the 389. I love the wire grill inserts although I still like the 66s overall front end better. The '67s main weakness is that the tail-light panels all rust out. For me this is a very close call & if you want an automatic car I would recommend you get a '67 or get a 66 & put in a Turbo 400 & a dual gate. If you want a four speed I would recommend the '66 every time. Just my 2 cents worth. Jerry.

I'm like Phil, actually like the 65 the best. Second though from the 64-67 is the 66. Don't get me wrong, I do like the 67 just like the 66 better. Years ago I didn't like the 67 grill or tail lights nor did I care for the wide trim at the bottom with the small GTO crest, but now I'm starting to like it more and more. Funny how your taste change over the years.

65 will always have a soft spot in my heart, first car was a 65 Tempest, but totally fell in love with the 66. Best taillights ever! I think more design work went into the 66 especially the rear of car. Was never a fan of wire mess grill on 67, or the vinyl inlays on dash and console. The real wood on 66 I think looks better.

67 obviously. Prefer the wide lower trim and the rear tail lights. Along with the mesh grille.
On the inside the wood grain console and the hazard flasher on the column. The dual Gate shifter is a great touch as well along with the Turbo 400 transmission. Also the 67 dash trim pad is much cleaner looking than a 66. A 66 would be second choice.

The 1966 GTO has always been my favorite, but I like all Pontiacs.

I really like 66 GTO's in Bright red and Squeezed lime green. (lol....)

67. The grill, tail lights, large stainless rocker trim, interior pattern and 11 more ci, 3 speed auto. The only thing the 66 has on the 67 was the 3x2 setup. I've always thought that gm took a really cool 66 and made some big upgrades and refinements and that's your 67.

1966 is my favorite year because of the taillights. I also like the narrower chrome trim on the side. But the 1967 has the HO motor and disc brakes so it's not an easy choice. Overall, the top three years for me are: 1) 1966; 2) 1965; and 3) 1967.

66 for me too. I wonder why? LOL A 66 GTO was the very first car I owned back in 1970... for 1100 bucks To me those 66 tail lights with 3 lights each are the best of all GTO years. Reason being you can do the Cougar and Shelby trick of sequential blinkers. And they're one of a kind never repeated again.

The 66's grills to me look like the car has a solid front to it with the full header panel. The 67's looks like something is missing up there. Tho the wire mesh is the coolest part of a 67 GTO's frontend. It's also the reason I've run with the 67 wire mesh in a set of 66 grills off and on for the last few years. Sure messes with some people's minds too. LOL

Tough one but voted 66 because of the Tripower WS plant over the 400. Bow tie look of the 66 just look sweet!

66 has the coolest tail lights in the industry.

67 has better grills, rocker moldings and you could get a hood tach. And if you must have an automatic... that dual gate!

I still prefer 66. Those tail light bezels.
