Nice Cliff. Mine are all Kohler gas engines. Very simple to fix, well at least most of the time.

The JD-212 is Kohler powered, had to rebuild it once about 20 years ago after it burned a slot out of the piston from a mouse building a nest right against the cooling fins. Using genuine Kohler parts it was nearly the cost of going thru a Chevy 350 V-8 engine!

The JD-318's are powered by Onan twin cylinder engines. Not even sure if you can buy rebuild parts for them these days. Most folks re-power them with Honda V-twins.

The problem with the larger JD offerings like the X series is that the better ones are Yanmar powered and it's difficult to find them on the used market, at least inexpensive ones. I lucked out on the X740 it came up for sale about a mile from the house when it's owner retired, downsized from 10 acres to less than 1/4 acre and the X740 was just too big for the yard and took up too much of his garage space.........

I have never seen any of the early Cub Cadet's with the diesel, they are pretty rare in these parts. Yanmar made some later compact tractors for them and they are really nice machines. Most of the newer Cub Cadet line is made by MTD if I'm not mistaken, they aren't that great.......

The Diesels are rare, but are a sweet machine.

MTD took over the Cub Cadet production operations in 1982, but the real downturn was in 1998 when they stopped producing the Cyclops series. The chassis was still basically the 82 series IH with revised plastic front clip and different rear sheet metal pan.

You still see a lot of those being used in these parts. I also see quite a few JD-318's and a few older Wheel Horse units. The Wheel Horse where capable but crude in comparison to the Cub Cadet and JD offerings.

I moved up to a JD-455 diesel then on to an X740, both Yanmar diesel powered. Love my 318's but the diesels are just better everyplace especially the shaft driven mower deck and diff-loc........

Thought I'd do an update on the Yanmar SA424. I've been using it as much as I can (bad weather) and it's been doing a great job. It is very capable for the size of the tractor. I've moved a LOT of logs with it to a central location or to the boiler so I can cut them up there instead of in the woods and having to go after them with a trailer. We had so much rain here it washed out the lower part of my driveway and I've had to move a lot of material to put it back in shape, plus clean out the ditches down at the main road that were filled with debris and allowing water to flow out on the road.

The only issue I've had was bending the "fingers" on the grapple. It has enough hydraulic force with the two cylinders on it that if you aren't squared up on a log or it's small enough to get between them and you clamp down to hard they will bend left or right. I straightened them back up yesterday and welded some 1" .093" wall chromoly tubing between them. I'm going to go ahead and well supports between the lowers as well out near the points as a precaution, using 1 1/2" tubing there. I should have that finished up today. The wheel weights finally showed up and went on yesterday.

They are calling for some nicer weather in the next few weeks so it's going to get a good workout. I'm going to order a couple loads of limestone for the driveway and if the ground dries up I'll get back on clearing the tops and making piles out of the logs........

Thumbs up

Well I finally was able to find one, only two hours away. Under 900 hours and good original paint. It had some mechanical issues, such as a missing oil pressure relief ball, intermittent starter, and bad glow plugs. Runs like a Swiss watch now..

Looks nice. Now you got me thinking about a diesel. I have enough gas CC tractors to work/play on.

Local John Deere dealer (part of about 10 dealers belonging to the parent company) periodically has an auction.

Lots of "lease program" units, plus many older JD L & G, Gators, some tractors, and occasionally an off-brand.

Stuff normally goes a bit above wholesale.

As far as gasoline vs diesel (opinion): diesel was invented to use as penetrating oil, and it worked well for awhile, but now there are better penetrating oils.

And yes, I have one. The only reason I still have it is respect for my Dad, who bought it new. I inherited it with his estate. I tried every way I could think of to talk him out of buying the diesel; and after about 6 months (1 winter) he regretted the purchase.

Might check in your area for a local auction.

Jon

The diesel model numbers from this era are:

782D(red)
882
1512

Super Garden Tractors:

1572
1772
1782

I have mowed with this several times, and run it a bit to work the bugs out since the April 12 acquisiton. In that time, it has only used 1.5 gallons of fuel. This is far better consumption than my M18 gas Kohlers.
