best way to cut hole for hood tach?
Back in the day I used a hole saw. It was not easy cutting the framework.
I'd briefly searched for a fine toothed hole saw; but I'm just wondering if there is a better way? |

I do not remember there being any framework. I used a drill bit, a Unibit then a pair of offset snips spiraling outward to the marked circle to reduce distortion.

Did this a few years ago. Just used a new hole saw for metal. Then put lots of tape to minimize any scratching/wandering. Put a little epoxy primer on with a q tip to prevent rust on the edge. Lots of measuring happened first.

If you can get a hole punch that's the right dimension, it will make a nice round hole without distortion. You do need to drill a pilot hole for the bolt.

The templates that I have indicate that some bracing will be cut.
I know i cut bracing on the last one. I dont see how you could avoid it? Does anyone have a photo of the underside of a factory hood tach install for 1971 GTO? Thanks. |

As per posts #42 & #43, the hood support channel must be cut for proper placement.

Sounds like you may have to use a cut off wheel to cut through the frame. Then maybe the knock out tool or hole saw.

I reached out to Ames for a template which they emailed to me.
Went to lowes, bought a new lennox 3.5" hole saw. New hole saw had large, strange teeth, said it was for metal. Easily cut the hole right through sheet metal and frame work. Template was perfect. Easiest install ever. |

I had to cut a small amount of bracing on my 1970 Gto hood tach install. I had my template 100% in the correct spot. Thought I messed up.
