Dead Flat rattle can clear
Does anyone make a dead flat clear rattle can? I need to top coat my upper dash. The Rustoleum "Matte" clear I tested still appears to have too much gloss. I see SEM makes a "Matte" clear ... pretty sure "dead flat" is a lower gloss finish.

Do it gloss and hit it with a white scrubby, not dull enough? Use green. Originally they had 60% in 60's as I recall. Some even had a tiny texture

I was considering using some steel wool ... have green and maroon scrubbies, might have to get some white.

I don't think a scrub-pad will give you good results. I've had Flattener added to my paint to get the Flat/Dull finish but never tried to top coat over the reg paint.
FWIW; KRYLON has 2 offerings of a FLAT CLEAR as well BEHR offers a FLAT not Matte. I've not used either so can't say if their a good choice.

Have you tried the SEM? I use the matte clear on all of the interior stuff I refinish and it looks fine. Very little to no shine at all. My dashes that I have done are fine and non reflective if thats your concern.

Yep, my major concern is reflections off the dash ... in the shop, with the overhead lights it's pretty bad the way it is, even with what is suppose to be the right paint.

i use the SEM clear for interior parts with great results. the one i use is called "low luster" clear, not flat or matte, it doesnt have any gloss to it or very little & makes the parts on 2nd gen firebirds look like the factory sheen.

I think thats the same I use, the low lustre.

I just ordered some SEM Matte ... which hopefully is pretty flat. The SEM low luster clear is one of their vinyl paints ... the SEM Matte I think is for hard parts. I'm doing the metal upper dash so I opted for the Matte.
If it's not as flat as I want I'll be making a felt cover for that part of the dash if I plan on a lot of driving I put a shop rag up on the dash, was like putting on polarized sunglasses, all the reflections disappeared, visibility got WAY better.

Not the best pic, but this dash pad is finished with the low lustre/matte (When I get to the shop today I will double check what product I used for sure). I dont think you will have a problem. 2021-01-10_12-12-14 by Kerry Grubb, on Flickr Same product on the dash in my black car. |

The upper picture looks flatter than what I have, the lower looks about the same as what I have. Hmmm .. wonder if my shop lights are making things seem a lot worse than they are.

The SEM 1K matte did the trick .. WAY better than what I was using.
Thanks folks.
