Then what would the explanation be to why there is such a low amount of 4 speed W72's? Only 1267 of those, & they could be ordered all year long. But your saying there should be over 4000 Auto W72's when they had less then half of the time to be ordered? Like 2manyT/A's & I keep asking "Where are they if there are so many?"
Personally, I am surprised that there are only 1267 4 speeds. If I wanted that engine with an auto trans & couldn't get it, I would have ordered the 4 speed rather than going with the std engine. But that's just me. If I had to guess on the numbers based just on how many Y88's I have seen at shows & for sale, I would have thought there were less auto cars than 4 speeds. So I thought 2000 was very generous.

If it was 4000, then there would be more W72 cars than L78's & If that is the case, Then I will quit looking for those cars individually, & start looking for the guy who ordered well over 2000 of them & stuffed them all in a huge warehouse somewhere.

I know of 2 more Y88 cars locally. One I know is a 4spd car but now has a 455 in it, I haven't had a chance to stop and talk to the owner yet but I see it around town all the time. The other one is sitting behind a house with a tarp over the roof in a horse pasture. I can't get close enough to it to see what it is exactly. Owner dosen't want to talk to me. Last time I stopped they had a note on their door from the power company threating to shut off their power if they didn't pay their bill but they don't want to sell the car? Argh....

The movie factor was why some of the dealers weren't coming off the sticker price or were above it!

Gay Pontiac was the only one around I found that was $1300 below sticker.

I don't think there are 2000--or 4000. Sounds like we're talking about different numbers. I thought you posted something over 300--like 345ish. I don't have time to reread your post right now though. I was thinking in the 700-800 range.

Ok. Sorry about that. The 300-ish number I originally was guessing at was me just plugging in the 1977 production percentages of W72 4 speeds Vs automatics. Then I took that percentage against the known 4 speed cars & then divided against the amount of months they were made. That came out to 300+ I thought you were referring to John's estimate of 2000 cars. 700 would have been very believable. It would put the Auto cars at a faster production rate over the 4 speeds,
& would still be less because of the short run. It would also put the amount of sightings of these cars in line against all the other drive train options. IMO.

Honestly, I have been just addicted to the Y88 cars for about 20 years & since the advent of the Internet, I have been avidly looking for them for the past 10 years. I have only seen three confirmed W72 auto cars that were for sale. One was a very plain car. No options at all, just the W72 auto & Y88. The 2nd was in Canada, It was painted black, it needed restoration & didn't have the original engine anymore, but was loaded up. The last one I saw was on ebay last year. It was an ultra low mile, loaded survivor. It was up to $25,000 when the seller ended the auction early because some guy flew out & made the seller an offer. That was a very nice car. I kept all the pictures of it too

I pulled what was left of this buildsheet out of the backseat of my '78. The seats came out of another car but I got to looking at the options this car had. Man would I love to find out what happened to it. Its not a Y88 car but it was a WS6, W72 auto with black interior. Yummy..

Well, I tell you I never see any of these cars, & walaa, one pops up!

This is the second legit car I have seen on ebay. It proves they do exist anyway.

The Solar gold paint for 78 was the official color for the Y88's, but it was available on std T/A's as well. I have seen Solar gold T/A's being advertised as S/E's becasue of the color only, even though the car was not a Y88.

It's the other way around!
ALL Y88's are Solar Gold.
ALSO,they ALL have Camel Tan interior with tan steering column & Formula wheel,GOLD tinted Fisher T-tops & GOLD Snowflakes.
ALL should carry a 78 build date,as I believe that release date was delayed due to paint & T-top issues.

I'll try to get some pics soon. Both cars have a repaint to a different color, but they are factory gold cars.

Default Y88 w72 ws6 Auto

Hi guys , I find this interesting Chat . My Daughter and I just purchased a 78 Y88 W72 Ws6 Package . It is very solid from Texas . I have to agree that there were fewer W72 Automatic Cars built also . I’m posting a pic of my trim tag with a 03D build date and PHS Doc on this car .if what you say is correct on the cut off date for ordering these cars looks like mine is very close to being one of the last built. I am currently looking for the build sheet . Hope this helps

Was the W72 and WS6 part of same package at this time, I haven't read through old posts. Basically, how do you know yours is W72 also?
