Yep - right you are. These are so far from the Pontiac Mag as I work thru them all, so some of these may be various writers doing dubious research on a topic probably.
On the other hand, the HO articles, Nunzi, and Herb Adams stuff is more based on hard experience.

"Worked for the division as a product planner" would be incorrect.

"Chief ad man over at Pontiac's ad agency" would be spot on.

Man - could we argue the subjective ranking in this list?

I am not a '60's expert, although I did own a '67 Tempest OHC 6 as my 2nd vehicle, and it kicked serious A** because it was so light and handled fantastic. I totaled it

And I remember as a little shaver my Dad (worked for GM) would bring home Tri-power Bonnies and Cats, and they would go almost 25 MPH w/o stepping on the gas pedal, and he loved scaring the crap out of me and the Bro.. Guess the idle was pretty high?
Mikes Reply: From my recent reading about Transmission's, an added washer on an Automatic at the Booster Regulator before the Pump will do the same thing, at least it did when I tried it. JMO

I would agree with the above comment.

I would also agree with Keith Seymore's comments as he and his dad were campaigning a Royal Pontiac Car in 1964 and 1965.

The rest of it is "creative marketing" and/where Jim Wangers was a PRO on the subject.

Nuff Said.

What a great car, would love to own one. 480 Ft Lb Tq and .83 G in the corners - Impressive -stump pulling torque. That is what matters on the street
Not "very" Rare at 3402 total produced, with 1353 Manuals, but who wouldn't want one to show off!
I don't hardly ever see one at the many car shows here in MI.
My dad was an engineer at the Tech Center and brought a blue one with black interior home in '71 with an auto. I loved that car mostly for the cornering. I had a '71 Z28 at the time and the Trans Am was so superior in every way. He had it for a few days, and back then everywhere we went, people stared at it like they'd never seen anything that wild before with all the spoilers. This was in the Motor City mind you. We took it on Woodward and it was pretty quick. These Trans Ams were rare then.

Part 1 here
When I started at Shaffo Pontiac in Royal Oak after Royal shut down they had a brand new '74 SD Formula sitting in stock well into 1974 when Fresard took over the dealer. I remember it was white, with a blue vinyl top and a white/blue interior. I don't remember the trans. As ugly as it was I wanted to buy it, but at $7,400 I couldn't live with the colors and I figured I would be too upside down redoing a brand new car. I had a '73 GP at the time and was happy with it. It finally sold as the '75 models came out, not sure what it sold for. The VIN on it was handy to order SD engine parts at the time.

You wouldn't still have the VIN for it? (or PHS)

Yep, but it was a Formula. And picture it with white seats/door trims and baby blue dash, console and carpet.

No. You couldn't order SD parts back then unless you had a VIN. We had about 8 VINs that we used for guys that were building engines piece by piece.

The "1978 Trans Am".
Almost sold my '77 Bandit as I was contemplating getting a Y88 Gold Edition.
Glad I passed on that, cause when the Smokey and the Bandit Movie came out there was no way that was gonna happen. I remember driving my Bandit to see the movie.

Of the 98K '78's built, the rare one is the Y84 SE with the Pontiac 400 mill and 4sp - only 20 built.
https://barnfinds.com/rare-1978-pont...ecial-edition/

And there were only 489 Y82 SE's (T-Tops) built with the 400 Pontiac mill and 4sp.
BUT - there were no Y81 Special Edition hardtops built? The Production info on the 4th attachment does not list any. Experts - please weigh in here!

"Y84 is Same as Y82 but applies only to Trans Am manufactured after mid 1978 calendar production. The Y84 code means that the t tops used were manufactured by Fisher and they were much bigger. The Y82 Trans Ams were built in low volume from 1976 through 1978, but this "Bandit" paint job carried on (under various other RPO codes) through the second-gen Firebird's final year in 1981. In 1977, the Y82 code represented only the examples with t-tops, while the hardtops showed Y81 on the build sheet."

"Tale Feathers"
Story on the development of the Firebird Hood Decals, known as the "screaming chicken".

Anyone who has installed one of these knows it is a challenge - once it locks in place you are done, and don't freak out with numerous "bubbles", just prick 'em with a pin and let the sunlight bake them out.

The "1977 - 1979 T/A 6.6L".
Last gasp of the 400 ci Engines before the 301 introduction
Yeah - they were only 200 - 220 HP, but the ~320 ft lb of torque in a heavy car made for a real tire burner.
I remember smoking the crap out of those god awful Uniroyal meats with my T/A 6.6 Bandit.

My '78 W72/WS6 did not come with the "Trans Am" decal over the left headlights.
Built Jan. 78. Perhaps this decal came in mid '78??

That is a good question - searching the web I see some do not have that decal. I think all of the SE's did have them?
