Default Preserving the rear window channel?

My rear window channel is still good, but it has rusted some.
I taped off the rear window and ran my sand blaster (glass bead) through there.
Cleaned up real nice; then i painted a few heavy coats of paint in there.

I've read that some folks have added drains to the channel.
That channel is awfully deep; about 7/8" or so; and it holds ALOT of water for a long time.
What can be done to preserve the metal?

You need it bare metal, if still has dark areas in pits, you need a product like POR. otherwise you need epoxy paint on the bare metal.
