Default Disc brake / drum brake wheels

Hi, my 69 GTO is a factory disc brake car. The tires that came with it won’t hold air. Will the stock steel wheels off my 68 LeMans (drum brake car) fit over the disc brakes? I can mount the tires on the 69 wheels but it would be easier if I could just bolt the 68 wheels with tires already mounted on it.

The drum brake wheels will hit the calipers.

Test fit one and you’ll see.

Of course by this time it’s quite possible that the original drum brake wheels that came on the Le Mans could have been swapped out for later 14x6” disc brake wheels, so you might get lucky.

HG's came in two different configurations. One for drum brakes and one for discs. Here is a picture of the difference. Both are HG coded wheels. The one on the Right fits drum brake cars, the one on the left fits drum and disc brake cars.

Am i mistaken in my memory that with the 69 and up single piston design you can run drum wheels?

You can’t.

Disc brake wheels required.

I have ‘69 GP front discs on my ‘64 Le Mans and drum brake wheels are a no go on the front.

IIRC 1970 was the first year for a single wheel for both Disc and Drum applications.

Well the wheels from the 68 LeMans bolted right up. I was surprised because the person I bought the 68 from got it in 1969 but I guess the wheels could have been swapped out. Or these are the original wheels to my 70 LeMans and I’m just getting confused in my old age.

The GTO doesn’t look right with black wall tires. I think I am going to order the correct thin white walls.
