Default Strange things under the hood 43k original

Just picked up this Lemans 43k miles,it's a shame the frame was so rusty and RH fender was gone.I haven't decided what I want to do with it yet. it may turn into a donner car for the 68 GTO I have or I'm going to sell them both. But anyway what is going on under the hood with the vacuum lines and idle solenoid, car is a 350 3 speed on column with a 323 posi

With the exception of the device spliced into the PCV line, everything you see is the factory emission system for the 68 V-8 manual transmission cars.

Yep ... that "can" in the back is the spark retard "thingie" used on manual cars in 68 (only I think) with the dual inlet vacuum can on the distributor.

Anyone know if that 2bbl idle solenoid will fit a 68 4bbl?

Looks like a factory Rad hose and clamp

Idle solenoid, great to have! All manual trans cars got them in 68. Definitely helps with the poor gas, when adjusted correctly, you can shut the engine off with no run on.

Nice project!

Thanks for posting those pics! I appreciate seeing some of those unmolested cars… so much info to be had regarding the routing of wiring and hoses and things like the stampings on that radiator hose. Id love to see different angles as well as firewall pics or anything related if you ever have the time to post them.

Thanks for posting your pics, I hope there’s enough left of that car to get another Lemans back on the road. Good luck.

Its not used for the A/C. Its to insure the engine doesn't run on when the key is off.

I too thought it was a "Idle Stop Solenoid" to compensate for AC load at idle. But obviously that vehicle has no AC. And I don't see it on the AC wiring schematics ... seems like it would have to be there if it's activated by the AC system.

I take it that it energized at all times when the key is in the run position to maintain proper idle and then when the key is off it allows the throttle plates to completely close?

Was there another similar part that was called "Idle Compensation Solenoid" that WAS used on AC engines?

Yes, whenever the ignition is 'on' the solenoid is energized.
IIRC this was Pontiac's way of insuring engine shut down due to new carburetor and timing settings in order to meet emission requirements.

It's also my understanding that Pontiac didn't use a 'idle up solenoid' for A/C until sometime in the 70s.

I pulled this one off of a '68 2-bbl years ago. I think it's the same except for the bracket, which you can see is bolted on. I know that the bracket on the one pictured here does not fit a 7028262 parts carb l have.
I'm guessing that with a 4bbl bracket l'd be in business. I never got around to using it on my car because l'm running a 1974 carb. It doesn't have that 'paddle' on the throttle arm for the solenoid to engage.

Was the idle stop solenoid fed by a black/single white wire with an end similar to what’s on the heater blower motor? I just came across that today up by the alternator and temp sender. I don’t think my laminated schematic I keep up on the garage wall shows it but I swear I remember seeing that called out in one of the handful of books I have spread throughout the house.

Thanks. I’m losing my mind with all these colors the past fews. Dash harness was last week and then finished up the engine harness last night. Not sure what’s worse… not taking pics during disassembly or taking detailed disassembly pics of some cob-job.

So basically with one of these solenoids installed and functioning on a 68 the carb idle speed screw would never actually be used to set the idle since the only time it would come into play is when the engine is shut off?

Are people having problems these days with run-on if they don't have this installed?

You set the solenoid idle, then unplug it to set the carb idle. Seems redundant at first glance...I guess that's in case it stops working.. ?
