Default 1970 Formula 400

1970 Firebird Formula 400

PRICE: $12500

LOCATED: Osprey, Florida

I do not have the PHS on this Formula. All numbers below clearly confirm a numbers matching 1970 Formula 400. The only odd question is YS standard Formula 400 or YZ Ram Air III Formula 400. The numbers matching block looks like it was factory double stamped both YS and YZ over the S (see photos). I suspect it is a standard YS Formula 400. I will leave the PHS up to the new owner to determine if it is indeed a YZ.

Vin: 226870L104931
Miles 130,445

Original paint code: 43 Keylime green
Current paint: Black

Original interior code: 216 Midnight Green Vinyl deluxe
Current interior: Black

Original numbers matching engine. Unverified TH400 transmission (likely original).
Original 12 bolt rear end.

Block VIN: 20L104931
Block ID: YZ or YS (dual stamp see photos)
Block code: 9799914
Block date 0D90

Correct Intake Manifold 9799068 date: 0B10
Non-Correct carb: 17058253

Correct Passenger head: 13 date: 0D80
Correct Driver head: 13 date: 0D80

Correct Passenger Exhaust manifold: 9796992 date: D090
Correct Driver Exhaust manifold: 480602 date: B240

********** Production:
Of the total 1970 Formula 400 production of 7,708, there were 689 Ram Air IIIs (code YZ) and 7,019 non-Ram Air 400s (code YS). Pontiac only built 293 Ram Air III Formulas with an automatic trans in 1970. The 7,708 total formula production breaks down to 2,777 manual and 4,931 auto.

********** Paint & Body
Painted approx 3 years ago and project stopped at that time. Nice overall black paint, needs to be cleaned and buffed. A few small chips on drivers door edge and passenger quarter panel otherwise nice throughout and will look fantastic. Very solid no rust (magnet tests great) quarter panels, rockers, fenders, doors, door jams, trunk, floors and dash corner areas. The lower rear valance panel shows no rust but when tested with a magnet shows filler repair. It looks like this lower panel was pushed in at some time in the past and repaired. The upper tail panel looks great. The drivers side fender has been replaced with a fender newer than 1970. The formula hood has hood pins and the vent slots have been filled in.

********** Interior
Perfect dash, nice center console, nice headliner and nice carpet. The seats are nice but have incorrect seat covers. These are newer high back firebird front seats than 1970 low back seats. The door panels look new but need the lower arm rest nap pocket panel. Needs general TLC and cleanup across the interior.

********** Mechanical
Starts nicely and sounds great (see videos). When this formula sits for awhile it requires a lot of gas pedal pumping likely pointing to carb bowl being empty and a sign of carb needing rebuilt. Once started it runs smoothly. No apparent leaks or drips when the car sits. The automatic transmission shifts normal forward and reverse. Driving is smooth. Overall steering, suspension and brakes work ok but will need rebuilt due to age. All lights and turn signals work normally. Tires look ok and have good tread but I do not know the age of the tires and they should be inspected.

********** Needs
Needs factory air cleaner assembly.
Needs factory AC components in the engine bay (compressor, brackets, etc) or switch to aftermarket AC, or remove.
Needs steering column repair or replacement as the center shaft pulls out.
Needs 2 Pontiac letters fastened on tail panel.
Needs glovebox door.
Needs correct seat covers or seats.
Needs lower door panels arm rest map pocket.
Needs general cleaning, buffing and refurb as mentioned in the sections above.

Wow! That is a heck of a car for a steal of a price. I just listed mine previously asking much more than what you are asking for yours. Grant it, mine has just had a complete rebuild. If I was in the market for a firebird, I'd pull the trigger on yours. Nice car and best of luck with the sale.

The heads being 13s is another indicator of a YS engine. A factory YZ would have had 12s.

Neat car - good luck with the sale!
