I put headers on my sons 78 Firebird and now I can't install the linkage for the neutral safety/backup lights that goes from the colume to the trans. How did you guys do this?

I know this may not be much help (since you already have headers installed) but I have Hedman headers and they fit perfectly on my 4-speed with no modifications whatsoever. I had to take off a set of Blackjack 3-tube headers because of the interference problem.

My Hooker and Hedman round ports both fit. My cheap Hooker D ports need a single tube changed to fit.

Maybe not the best solution, but my lever is still laying on the bench. Of course with this method you have no neutral safety switch or backup lights.

I did this when I installed a 200-4r transmission a couple of years ago. I never could get enough throw with the lever. I either had park and no 1st or 1st and no park.

OLD Thread, I know, but I'm installed Dougs D570 headers on my 79 Trans Am with 4spd and noticed the lockout rod will not fit. it looks like i'll need to heat and bend my original to get it to fit. does anyone make a rod for this or have a different solution? it looks like if the Rod was bent up instead of down like the factory had it, it would fit.

I moved my NSS, backup switch and PRNDL indicator to the console shifter and eliminated the need for all that backfired rod and linkage.

That's how most RHD converted cars have been since day 1, NSS and backup lights functioned from shifter. Auto being easier to setup than manual.

my car is a manual. I ran into more interference after tightening the header and ended up ripping the whole linkage out. The key lockout i can live with, but not having backup lights easily is what i'm not happy about.

I installed a small micro switch that is activated by the shifter when shifting into reverse on my manual. My shifter isn’t stock but I imagine it would work on a stock shifter also from what I remember.

Turn the collar with your hands for lock position and back-up lights.

Turn the collar to the right after you stick the key in and unlock the steering wheel. Forgot to do that one night and got pulled over for driving with back-up lights on. Never forgot again.

Been doing this on my 79 since 82 or 83.

Clay

PS If the loud peddal was to ever hang up WOT... You DON'T want the collar in lock position when you rush to cut the engine off.

All sounds like a perfect reason to get it sorted asap or decide how great those headers actually are.

Thank you for the replies, I’m going to look into the micro switch idea. Looks like a good solution.

I had the same issue with Hooker Super Comp. headers I installed on my '78 T/A back in 1992. I just lived with it and never tried to start it unless the transmission was in park, and I kept the steering column rotated to the "park" position so it would start. When I needed backup lights, I just rotated the steering column (where the shifter would connect if it was a column shift) and watched in my rear view mirror until I saw the backup lights come on, then rotate it back to "park" when done backing up.
