Default Ignition switch won't turn.

We took two cars up to Lime Rock Park for the vintage races last Saturday. My son drove our '79 Trans Am- car ran as normal for the ride up, a few laps around the track mid day, and then the ride home at the end of the day. I went back out to move the car an hour later and the key won't turn. Played with the linkage, twisted the collar, etc. and made no difference.
One thing I noticed is that the steering doesn't lock anymore. Not 100% positive that it locked before, but I believe that it did. Is it possible that the ignition lock itself broke? Is there anything else I should try?

Need to get this taken care of soon. The car is sitting outside in the way. Any insights are appreciated!

**Edit- I just wanted to add the the car has a tilt steering column and is a 4 speed.

Sounds like the locking pin has moved. Need to pull wheel. If do not need to lock can just remove pin and spring and forgedaboudit. (censored ?)

One of the tumblers came loose on my 79 and it was same as having the wrong key.

Put in a new lock cylinder and been working fine ever since.

If moving it is urgent and since your column doesn't lock.. You could unbolt the ignition switch from the column and crank it up with a pocket screw driver. You'ld want to tape or zip tie the switch rod and dimmer rod so they can't move out of place..With AC duct work in they way on mine, It was easier and faster to just change the lock cylinder.

I had the same issue Jeremy I had to replace the lock cylinder.

Through a buddy I found an old GM mechanic who worked on these cars and has done hundreds of them he did it in front of me while he talked to me it was like artist working on my car.

Would’ve taken me forever to do

Got the lock cylinder from a local auto parts store.

Damn- I wish I knew someone like that! I guess I need to study up on how to change the lock cylinder.

Secret is knowing what you can just leave out and what must be tightened (those three bolts).

Lock cylinder swapped out. Wasn't too bad. Having the proper tools makes all the difference.

Had the same problem with my 79 when it was 10 years old. Had to replace the lock cylinder. Appears to be a common problem for that year.
