From what I know, the foam is different, and there are 2 different seat foams for 1970 depending on if you have standard or deluxe interior...

Did you try Al Knoch for the foam?

1969 foam IS totally different from 1970.

Not that I am trying to seem contradictory, but the seat foam is the same for standard and deluxe interior;
For 1970-1972 the difference in deluxe or standard seats were the covers.

If you can't find any good foams;
I have a set I pulled from some seats over twenty years ago - I had thought my seat foams were needing to be replaced, so I wasted a set of 1970 Firebird buckets... but my foams were fine, they just needed a tiny bit of repair.

I'm hearing different plants used different foams depending on the year. And post-73, the seat frames are different for the rears. A mix of rear seat frames of some being a one layer frame, with thick foams that had springs in them, and 2 layer frames that had a thinner layer of foam.

I started a thread on it, and not getting much input, but am starting to think I may just 'convert' my rear seat frames to the one layer type, since the foams are very detail-formed. But am waiting to see if anyone can provide input.

I'm not clear on the front seat frames & foams, in my case, I'm using aftermarket seats.

the rear seats can be grouped into three types - these are all my personal observations:

1970-1973: thick; spring and burlap/cotton backing behind covers
1974-1976(?); thick; frame with formed foam backing
1977(?)-1981; thin; frame with formed foam backing

I mistakenly tossed my car's original rear seatback shortly after getting it, because I had a nice '77 velour seat in the rear;
I ordered replacement seat covers in 2001(?), and quickly found out that the replacement seat back cover was too big. The replacement covers were obviously for a "thicker" seat back - and I was happy at that time that I kept both original seat bottoms - I ended up using a donor '73 seatback (from my former '73 Firebird; and it took a while to find another one for that car).

It would be quite possible that the original burlap/cotton material was replaced by foam at some point after being built, but from my personal observations formed foam padding replaced the cotton/burlap material after the 1973 model year.
I am not certain what was used for 1974, but I have observed that 1975 used the thick style seat back with a formed foam pad ontop of the seat frame.

About the "different plants used different foams";
For 1970 & 1971 there were only two plants that built the F-body;
Norwood Ohio & Van Nuys California.
For 1972 & 1973 only Norwood built them.

I believe that the 1971-1972 (front) seat foams continued to be used on the 1973-1977 'standard' seats - while the 1973-1977 deluxe seats used the "horseshoe" style seats which were to my understanding a version of the Grand Prix seat.

That's good info there unruhjonny, thank you.

I should take pics of the frames and foams I have, and post for comparison and historical info.

If I had good photos of the frames without bolsters, or the 3 versions, I might be able to mod the frames I have to use the thick, formed seat foams. Those I can see a benefit to, since they are in a detailed shape, and would hold form/shape longer.

Ok, everyone, if you have good shots of the different seat frames and foams, please post. I will snap some of the ones I have tomorrow and post.
