HD 3 speed toploader from '65-'68 (maybe '69) in A and F body at least.

I have a stack of Pontiac bellhousings and all of them are drilled and tapped for a Ford transmission. I'm not sure that I have ever seen one that wasn't. But I'm sure others will know for sure.

Thinking of using a ford wcz or super A5 t5 with a chevy main shaft, have to check my bellhousing part #. Using a ford eliminates the tail shaft and shifter problem of a chevy.

I have been toying with the idea of my old rebuilders special 77' 400 in my 86 F-150 when the engine decides to quit. I have the L6 300 with the NP435. It would be a torque monster!

Agree, from 1965 on you often saw aluminum Pontiac Bell Housings set up for both the Muncie 4 speed and the Ford Top Loader 3 speed Trans (especially in "A-Body" Vehicles).

OK. I'll bite. What tasty options does the Ford trans parts bin open up? Anything with an overdrive that fits an F body trans tunnel?

Ford at one time offered a 3 speed Top Loader Trans (with 4th gear being a overdrive).
The trans went into a variety of commercial vans and trucks, mostly F-250 and 350 light duty vans. The trans external dimensions did not change, only the internal gear ratio for overdrive. It should fit anywhere that the Muncie 4 speed should fit as the same Muncie/Ford parts were used in the A-Bodys in the 60s without body issues.

Hard part will be finding one.

But the 3sp Dearborn trans that GM used had a GM input shaft and front bearing retainer that differed from the Ford version. At least that's what I remember reading.
So the Dearborn overdrive input shaft would need to be modified, I would think

Correct, you would need to match up a Pontiac (Ford) 3 speed input shaft with the later Ford Van OD trans. The parts should still be around and a lot cheaper vs a Richmond ot T-5 style OD trans.

I have a Ford toploader 4 speed in my car. Works great and is stronger than any gm tranny. Liberty gear made me an input shaft to work with my finespine clutch. It was $340. I had to mill the large front bearing retainer to fit my scattershield. (the small bearing retainer will not work with a gm opening)
I just drilled the scatter shield for 2 bottom bolts I think and welded nuts on the other side. The tranny has held up so far to some nice horsepower. I also traded the long shaft for the short shaft. The reason I did this was it was now the same lenght at the tko 600 I had. ( plus the shorter output shaft is stronger).
All this work and next year I going to Automatic!! I would not hesitate to do it again the tranny in stock form can hold up to 800 hp when built right. So far it has.
