Default 69-72 “PQ” Torque Converter

Howdy,
I’m looking for an original 69-72 turbo 400 PQ torque converter. I know they are as rare as hens teeth, but have to throw it out there. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Alan

I have a converter like this but it came out of a 70 RAIV car.... Are they the same or is there a way to confirm what it is? It's been painted black.

Yes, I believe that looks correct if it's a 13" diameter with the furnace brazing. I didn't see anything stamped (factory) anywhere on the convertor, only the green 5-5 painted on it.

I'm wrong, there was a small 'D' shaped stamping on the housing along with the 5-5. There were 7 furnace brazed 'buttons' like on yours.

Thanks..... Interesting uncovering this history. The 13" switch pitch converters have these same welds but the 12" don't. I also can't say I've noticed them on aftermarket "furnace brazed" converters.

Does anyone know the stall/flash speed of a stock PQ converter??

I have a 7 button furnace brazed converter and will have it tested but need the stall/flash speed to know if it's correct.

FYI-I have a 8623964 remanufactured torque converter in the GM box and it does not have the 7 brazed buttons.

There is a hand-written list of about a dozen 13" Converters in one of the Pontiac parts folklore history paperbacks. Further research showed me the Pontiac 455 and STD GTO, A-body Olds being all the same.
Tow package 428 HO and Ram Air GTO; diff would be around 200 rpm in stall. The list was famous for showing Ram Air V Converter with a 500 rpm stall increase. THAT would be a good Converter.

In other info, i Forget if Caddy was same or lower stall side. Biggest diff i found was the Chevy Truck and old Vette 13" Converters were fully brazed & 6-lug. Likely about 200 rpm higher stall.

Some have evidence of spot welds to indicate special stiffening. That would be the indicator of higher stall for higher hp engines. Pretty sure the stator and bearing materials were the same.

12" Converters from 2-speed OHC-6 and ST-300 were always higher stall behind a 400/455 with great tightness. Even the 12" switchpitch vs the 13" switch pitch, yet i had the 12" SwiPitch vaporize the internals on enthusiastic street driving (perhpas twice if i count a modern off-shelf Performance rebuild that promised a steel stator (bunch of crap). I have a kenne-bell swi-pitch that continues to work well after 455 Street-Strip use in the low 12s.

In Summary, overall;
Any time we can find a STOCK 13" Converter with a high stall, it is probably a superior install for Street/Strip. I think 4L80 gasoline Converters have that dynamic.

Built a Couple PQ TH400s, neither had Converters, neither were reinforced cases, only had VB Separator plate diff from STD GTO. Only the Tag was special. I think they were 5/16 cooling lines too. Forget because i have a habit of installing 3/8 cooling fittings on performance builds whether they need it or not.

Overall GTO TH400 was a lesser deal than Big Car Pontiacs, all Olds and Caddy TH400s, and Some Chevy Truck Th400. Is what it is. 3/8 cooling line fittings are a tell tale for the good TH400s.

I have a 13" "5-5" converter that is in my 1974 PQ trans with the 7 braze marks like in post #8. Send me your email and I'll send you pics. Only one of the 5s can be seen but is in the same position as in post #8 and it has the "D" stamp on it.
