Muncie Trans. Rebuild
I have a few Muncie 4-speed trans. from parting out cars over the years.
Probably 4 - 5. Most are M20. One is M21. '64-'70. Would like to go thru them and rebuild what is necessary. Any recommendations for a good "How To" book? I see there are a lot of books available... any that stand out? Is this something I can do in my garage? Special tools required or...? Thanks!

I did mine in the garage with a harbor freight press . Check out 5speeds.com . He offers a good manual & video . He offers excellent kits , tool and upgrade parts like the iron midplate . Figure on new forks & sliders - they are not part of the kits . Mine were fairly worn on a 90k mile unit . Also , buy the Muncie front nut wrench - it’s inexpensive and necessary so u don’t destroy the front but . I used a length of pipe to press parts on & off the main shaft .

John, I have an excellent VHS video tape and a DVD of the same showing you step by step. This is how I learned many years ago. It is EXCELLENT. I would be willing to send them to you to watch and or make copies of. You will absolutely be able to build your own after watching these. I purchase all my rebuild parts from SK Speed out of New York, Brian Higgins.

Thanks very much for the offer to let me borrow your Muncie rebuilding videos. Is the VHS same as the DVD or (2) different ones? I can copy either one or both and will reimburse you for shipping. My address: John D. Schuh Jr. 5341 Fern Drive Fenton, MI 48430 Thanks again & have a happy Easter weekend! John (RA1John)

Paul Canigialosi is the guy behind 5speeds.com. He has some videos on youtube as well. His DVD is very good, as are his parts. I've done a couple thanks to him.

I did one in the dining room floor of my mother’s old house. Was very easy and ran into no hiccups except burning a hole in the linoleum with a shop light LOL

Having a press makes the build-up of the main shaft easier, but not absolutely necessary. I have taken one all the way down to replace gears trackside with just some lengths of pipe, a big hammer, and a bearing spliter. Really nice heavy duty snap ring pliers and some blocks of wood also make the job easier. As you probably know, 64 and 65 have mostly different internals than 66 and newer. 7/8" cluster shaft vs 1" starting in 66. Gear ratio's are also slightly different. So no interchangeability of gears between the early and late versions. Have fun.

John, just seen you replied. I will get the video out. They are both the same, one VHS and one DVD, which one do you want me to send ?
