Pontiac 389 SD
I might be putting this into the market a rare 63 389 SD 4 bolt main motor, many say more rare than a 421SD because nascar used these motors.. gauging interest and price from the group..

What heads,that intake was never a SD part,it was a M/T over the counter piece.Besides the block the amount of correct SD parts on the block can make a huge diff.Balancer,distributor intake and carb are worth more than the block.Tom

Anybody else on this planet campaign a M/T hemi Pontiac for eleven seasons? ... or has built a record breaking DOHC hemi four cylinder Pontiac? ... or has driven a couple laps of Nuerburgring with Tri-Power Pontiac power?(back in 1967) |

Was there a 389SD in 1963? Pete McCarthy's book only shows them for 1960-1962. There was also the 425A Trophy motors in 1960-1962 that weren't technically SD blocks; while they had four bolt mains they didn't have the chamfers at the top of the cylinders.

It is a 62 block, has the original crank, distributor, pullies, balancer, and rods, a good friend of mine whom built this motor and knows Pontiacs (Ron Rocchi ) informed me that it was a 62 389SD block, yes the heads are missing as is the original intake. The factor Cast Iron Headers are easier to run than the aluminum ones... Tom

538177 heads are std '61/'62 heads value ?? $500 rebuilt. If they have "x" and "o" stamped on the center exhaust bosses they are 425a heads so worth more mebby $1000. I recognize the carbs as 3705 Mopar AFB crossram carbs so worth $750 minimum. If the distributor and balancer are indeed sd components they are worth $500 distributor and $1500-2000 balancer. Cast iron sd exhaust manifolds now days worth $3 grand imo. 4 bolt main 425a block worth $1000 bare if a real 389sd block dk value I've never seen one not in a car. Nice engine I have no idea what it is worth together like that I would start at $10,000 probably.
As Tom said and Adecco acknowledged the intake is wrong a real 389sd would have had the 540510 aluminum tripower intake on it. |

I have to go back and look,I think the 389 SD cars actually had a single 4 intake.Tripower was not a option IN a SD car.They were aftermarket for the 61 SD over the counter engines.Tom

I had a tripower intake years ago that a guy gave me. The part number came back to be a 1960 Super Duty intake according to Pete’s book. The best I could ever find out was it was part of some over the counter parts offered by Pontiac. The only difference between the SD intake and the regular production tripower intake was the SD had no heat riser. I carried it to a lot of swap meets and finally traded it for something. There was zero interest in it back then,probably 25 years ago.

My 1961 parts book has numbers for a single 4 bbl and a tripower intake to fit the SD heads.

1962 389SD engines were 12B and 12T,all were single 4 engines with 3444S NASCAR 4 bbls.I could only find 7 SD cars built with that engine codeIs there any code on this block?.Tom

I hold the unpopular belief that prior to 1962 Pontiac never used the term "Super Duty" or "SD" (if anyone has literature from '61 that says otherwise, please speak up). Up through '61 PMD referred to all racing-intended parts as "Heavy Duty"- McKellar cams, etc. One reason I know this is that it was summer of '61 when I bought my aluminum Tri-Power.
Thus... I have trouble discussing any so-called 1961 Super Duty engine. Is there any evidence that Pontiac ever sold to the public a complete 389 with all of the 1961 Heavy Duty parts?

Isn't this post in the wrong section? Seems to be a lot of good information.. Other folks might be able to contribute to the conversation if it were else where.

Jack,I know in 61-62 there was a HD balancer and a SD balancer.The only diff I could ever see was the depth of the groove?In 63 they put a retaining ring on the SD that was bolted to the front incase it came apart.Tom
