Default Any Experiance with 67 California emission systems?

I finally took my new to me 67 Sprint Firebird out for more than a spin around the block.

I drove it about 60 miles one way to a friends house for his annual Mod Meet. Everything was fine until I was about 10 miles from my house on the return trip, and then the car stalled out at idle at a stop light, would not restart until I let it cool down, then when it did restart it was pouring blue smoke out the exhaust, and I heard a load pop bang, and it had blown the cap off the oil fill tube? I have done no T/S at this point as I had just enough time to get it home and then take the wife out for Mothers day.

So is there anything I should look for in the Smog pump system that could cause something like that, Stuck PCV, or smog pump check valve? When the car was idling without the fill tube cap installed it seemed to have to much pressure coming out of tube, almost looked like a steam locomotive stack chugging.

Fingers crossed that it is not engine related, the car is a 67 Sprint, 104,000 miles, still has all the California emissions system hooked up. I can't seem to even find a diagram of the system on line, only for Camaro's.

Any Ideas welcome. I do plan on doing a compression check & disconecting the smog pump belt, and possibly the air line to the air cleaner to get a better idea of what is going on.

Nothing to do with the smog pump. That simply pumps air into the exhaust manifold. Hate to say it, but seems internal.

Thanks, I was afraid of that, just didn't plan on doing an engine rebuild just after buying the car, but it does have over 100K on it so not totally unexpected. Hopefully I will get a chance to do some T/S this week

I would pull the plugs and perform a compression check on each cylinder.

Or if you want to be extra careful use a bore scope to look in each cylinder to see if there is any damage to the piston tops especially around the edges.

Hopefully it is not a major problem but it could be a broken piston ring or damaged ring land allowing compression to pass into the crankcase.

Thanks, that is the plan, don't know when I will get to it at the moment. as the next 2 weekends are booked helping my sister move back to MI from MD.

I suspect I have an engine rebuild in the near future.
