What a great SJ! The 455 with a 3.07 Saf-t-track is a great road car and surprise stop light bandit. I would love to see it in person. Enjoy!

Thanks Dennis, Chad and everyone else that has commented. I'm happy to be the caretaker of it.
Chad, you should stop by on your way back to Iowa, we'll go for a ride
Dennis, if you're ever near southern Wisconsin, you're welcome to stop as well. You can grab Sparks on your way, LOL.

Yeah, the 455, M40 trans and 3.07-geared 12 bolt make for a good, all-around cruiser. Seems to have a sweet spot from about 40 to 80 mph in 2nd gear (when the kickdown is activated). Cruises nicely around 60 mph as well.

I think the bolt for the flexplate cover is in upside down.

And they do nicely at 70-90.

yeah, I noticed that too. I know they usually go in from the other direction, but will have to see which direction the rest of the bolts are facing. If it's wrong, I'll fix it

My '72 is a loaded Model J, and it also came with a pile of original paperwork when I got it a few years ago. Too bad they didn't come with a gas station credit card, mine gets around 10 m.p.g.
my parents had a triple black '76 SJ that got 22 mpg. Dad wanted to remove the cats and run regular gas and I convinced him not to touch it! I ended up with the car and regret selling it. Had a '69 4-speed a/c car and a couple of '74s...love 'em!!! Beautiful find on this '72! Unique in it's option package.

Wondering what the dealer code is for Schledorn on it?

I have the 'Buick' number but not the Pontiac number.

Have not ordered the PHS and probably won't. The car still has all of the options that are shown on the order form and I believe the build sheet is stuck behind the back seat. Maybe I'll pull that out this weekend.

Weekends, weekdays, whenever the weather is nice. Need to put it in rotation with the others.

The PHS is worth ordering since it might show something your current paper work doesnt

Default exhaust

Does anyone still have original (or correct) tail pipes on their car? If so, could you post some pics please? Mine was replaced, so I'm trying to determine what they should look like. I believe they are similar to the '69 GTO tail pipes (with the base engine), having a bevel cut at the end...? See the attached pic.
thanks

Actually, that bolt is correctly installed in that location on the shield. What usually happens is the hole in the shield gets stripped out from being over tightened and then a larger bolt gets put in from the other direction to bite into the trans case hole.

Yes, same tailpipes as '69 GTO with manual trans and base 400. Gardner Exhaust offers the correct systems for '69 to '72 GP's now, but I believe they only sell the complete system. Here's a photo of an original tailpipe from one of my past GP's...

Interesting. I can't remember seeing one like that before now.

Ahh, ok, then I'll leave it as it is. Thanks for the info.

Great, thanks for the pic. I didn't know Gardner offered systems for the GPs. Checked their site last week, but didn't see anything. They must not have added it to the site yet. Besides Gardner, do you know of anyone that makes a correct system? The pic I posted was from the Walker web site, but I don't care for their kinked pipes (in the bends). I also looked into Waldron exhaust and a system for sale on eBay, but neither of those look quite right, at least as far as the tail pipes go...

The guy I dealt with at Gardner's would not sell GTO tail pipes to me, unless I bought everything else. And I was already getting a full set for another car at the time.
Because of fit variations with other brands of parts, I can understand why.

With the optional "correct" clamps included it totaled around $1200.
