Restored rear end?
Anyone have pictures and colors of how to correctly restore the paint/appearance of a 68 rear end?

I was going to hit the 'Thank' button for that...but after thinking about it...Holy crap, I'm trying to un-see it. We need a "THANKS A LOT!!!" button.
Back on topic though, I'm about to do a rearend swap and could use the same info while it's lying on a dolly.

I guess if your going for judge's opinions the 60* black might be the way to go.
Personally I like the natural finished housing with related components black. In regards to being aesthetically pleasing it just looks so much better. Edit... Frank

If half painted is correct, and I suspect it is, I'm just going to leave mine as I already painted it back when purchased. Incorrect black.

It seems to have varied by year and plant, I’ve seen virgin cars where the whole assembly was clearly all painted chassis black and I've seen others where clearly they only painted the back (gas tank side).

You have to take into account the way the chassis was assembled and then painted at each plant.
From what I can decipher, these components would come to the factory in bar form. Then everything was assembled to make a 'rolling' chassis. At which point, the assembly would be painted/coated in black, which may include painting over all of the color dabs that were left on the chassis during assembly. So there will be some parts of the chassis and suspension components that may have been bare after paint, but overall the rear in this case would be black. How much would be black would depend upon the plant and even the painter. Some assemblies would be completely coated in black whereas others would be black, but maybe the inside portion of the chassis assembly might be left bare because of the painter not spraying absolutely everything. Even though I do think the natural colored rear is more visually appealing, a black painted rear would be more correct, with color dabs being painted over. |

I'm going to replicate the car that had the new guy who didn't know he didn't have to put the three coats of satin black on every nook and cranny of the assembly. I'm calling it a day
