I think it depends on what you find when you open it up and what your goals are for the engine in the Omega. The Kanter / Egge kits have there supporters and detractors, I've never used one. One thing for certain, do you have access to a good machine shop? The way an engine is machined is as important as the parts the go inside of course.

I think your project is really cool, hope it works out good for you.

BR's,

Mark

my brother and his son are pro mechanics and run their own shop but are no experts on engines.

So they have build up a very good relation to an engine shop over the years which is very close to where I live.

This shop is very well respected in the vintage car community in Austria and I had a very long talk with them yesterday.

So we will keep the engine as it is - a ohc 6 230ci sprint.

I will dismantle it, clean it and than the engine shop will test and measure the block, head, cam and crank.

They will than also give me an advise which parts needs to be replace and than I should see if a total kit is required or just single parts.
Also if the block needs to be bored or block and head to be milled.

And than I'll comeback to get some more advice from you where to go and buy.

Thank you all so far

Classic X/F sub-frame, nice! And that's some sway bar you have there.

started to dismantle the ohc engine and found already some missing bolts?

Anyone aware of a complete set of bolts required for the ohc engines?

Leo Santucci recommends in his book about the Chevy inline 6 to replace the connecting rod bolts with e.g. ARP. Is this something required also for the ohc even if the bolts look fine?

I do have 2 questions for the cammer experts!

which engine do I have?
1) Numbers on the block:
Casting number: 9782000
Engine number (at least where it should be): D6 48398K
Number?: I 9785657

2) Intake manifold number: 9783266-35

3) Exhaust manifold number: 9782280

4) Distributor number: 1110378

I thought it is a 1966 LeMans 230ci sprint.

But the engine number is somewhat very strange, isn't it?

and here we go with the 2nd most important question, please.

The exhaust manifold is broken. the "hole" was covered with oil and dust so I didn't see it before. and they fixed it with "wood" behind the mounting bold and washer.

Can this somehow been fixed? Thank you all for sharing your thoughts!

Exo,

All of those number correlate to a 1966 Sprint engine. For the "D6 48398K" stamping, if you look closely, you can see the faint stamping of a "Z" in front of the "D". So in this case, a "ZD" engine is from a 1966 Lemans or Tempest with the 4 barrel Sprint engine, with a manual transmission.

Someone who knows how to weld cast iron may be able to fix the manifold.

George

Plan A: Try to fix it, because a replacement is not readily available.
Plan B: Get a replacement if the repair is not possible or not successful.

Let us know. Also, you said that other fasteners were missing when you started to dissamble. You should let us know which ones, and we may be able to help you out. Many of those bolts and such are proprietary to the OHC6 engine. A pic of the engine where the fastener is missing would help us to figure out which ones you may need.

Thank you for the confirmation!

Pistons and Rings will be replaced, I think

Rockerarms look good, except 1

Should be replaced, or?

Valves will also be replaced

Cam runs smooth without noise. lets see what they say in the shop about it

It Looks Like you need a new Cam & Cam Followers from the pictures, Luckly they are available again from Kanter.

As for the exhaust manifold, I could see it being repairable if you had the piece that was broken off, but without out that piece I think it is probably no repairable. But I would be happy to be wrong.
1966 Sprint intake & exhaust manifolds are 1 year only parts due to the square flange that the carb heat riser uses (where they bolt together) it is the same shape as the 66-69 1bbl manifolds. The 67-69 Sprint 4 bbl Manifolds have a different shape there, and will not work with you 66 Intake manifold.
So if you find that you exhaust manifold is not repairable, your option are looking for a 1966 only 4bbl exhaust manifold, or replacing you intake and exhaust manifolds with 1967-69 parts.

I do not have any 1966 Manifolds, but I do have a couple 67-69 intake/exhaust manifolds if you decide to go that way.

I did find the Aluminum 1966 front upper & lower Belt covers. and attached pictures. I did look over the pictures you posted and you already have the needed upper rear cover. So it would be $190 USD's plus shipping. The good news it is in better shape than most, there is no wear marks or groove from the water pump pulley.

Unfortunately I did not find any Firebird Motor Mount Brackets, I did find new Firebird rubber motor mounts. If you need them.

Let me know.

which signs make you think this is required?

Would you suggest to get all required parts from Kanter?

Be careful with the new sets because they can have a very course surface meaning the should be resurfaced first. I just rebuilt my OHC and had my existing followers resurfaced. Hard to see the depth of the scarring but you might be able to get yours reground locally.

I agree on the new cam Followers _ I have not used them as I had bought a few sets of Good GM sets back in the 1980's when they were still available.

Here are the Pictures of the New Reproduction Firebird Motor Mounts I have
