Default 68 GTO gas tank

Looking to buy a new gas tank for a 68 Goat. Looking in Ames catalog and its more than a 69 tank. Oversize shipping fee on tanks is $89 plus standard shipping but for some reason a 68 tank is $150 oversize plus standard shipping. You would think they would be pretty similar. Any recommendations for a tank and does anyone know if its thats much different from the other years to warrant outrageous shipping fees.

You might want to consider getting a stainless steel gas tank
from Auto City Classic.......I have them in my GTO and my Chevelle and they are fabulous.

How's the filler neck fit for a 68 on the Auto City Classic tanks?

FYI - Auto City Classics are not carrying 68 tanks at this time. I ordered online from Advanced Auto - will take original tank to radiator shop to be cleaned, then neck removed/soldered onto new tank.

BTW ... considering replacing my original 68 tank .... should I remove and keep the filler neck for use on a new tank?

Why have the original tank cleaned if you plan to use a new tank?
I have an original and a repop (made in canada)

fairly sure 68 necks are 1.5" shorter than a 69
I just put a 69 in a 68 rag top and the gas cap is real close to the plate bracket but the cap doesnt touch

The original tank is leaking badly; therefore, will be replaced. It has gasoline in it now. To remove neck properly without risk of BOOM, I believe that a cleaning will be needed. If not, then I won't.

As others have made mention, the 68 neck is different from 69 - measurably so. As this car was built on the first day of production in Pontiac plant (1967) I'd like to keep the neck and make tank more original. :-)

Still trying to decide if I should replace mine ... outside has considerable surface rust, nothing that looks like it would cause a leak though. Flashlight in the fuel sender hole I see shiny new looking metal ... will have to stick a bore camera in there and look at it better.

I wonder if you could fill it with soapy water to overflowing a couple of times to displace all the gas and more importantly, the fumes?

Good idea Greg. I had considered that earlier but had discounted it. I'll look into that when I remove tank.

pop the sender out
empty the tank
add dawn dish soap
fill a bit slosh n drain
repeat air dry
sawzall out a 6" + square so you can set the angle when you install
then sweat the tank off the neck

So if I replace my 68 tank I need to keep the original neck?

Hang onto the original neck, at lest until the new tank arrives. Wonder if folks install original necks onto new tanks.

The new neck may have a rear vent pipe that needs removed and plugged. I plugged such pipe and long forgot it is there.

You don't have to replace the neck but the angle of is off on the 69 and it needs to be bent upwards to clear the bumper opening behind the license plate. The 68 neck kicks upwards a bit where the 69 doesn't.

I'm confused Is there a replacement tank for the 68 that has the right neck, or are people using the 69 tank in 68s and tweaking the neck?

Probably the best question is .... what's the best, closest fitting off the shelf 68 GTO replacement out there?
