Probably the best question is .... what's the best, closest fitting off the shelf 68 GTO replacement out there?
The advertised 69 tank works in a 68

And as far as l know, they don't make a '68 specific tank with the angled neck.

So .... I guess I'll be saving my 68 neck. Shame the outside of my tank is rusty ... a camera inside shows it looking absolutely new. Was removed and put in the closed trunk when it was a driver 40 years ago.

Is the outside pitted or just surface rusted? It's not pitted, a couple of bottles of navel jelly and a roll of Saran wrap might do the trick.

It's still in the trunk by the way ... I looked at the top side and thought I had a shot at saving it, but when I lifted it up ... yep, it's pitted pretty bad on lower corners.

So has a community opinion shook out on which is the best brand to buy? I noticed a stainless unit on Rock Auto for reasonable money.

Spectra seems to be the #1 choice everywhere I have read

Agreed...order online through AutoZone and get 20% off plus free delivery. That's what I did for my 70.

Is the GM34A the right part number? No neck, two vents? How about their fuel sender units ... good/bad?

I got my tank and sender together at AutoZone. The tank was Spectra but it's been a while and l can't recall what the sender was. Spectra l think but Tamraz maybe?
No problems with either so far but some folks are saying that if your original sender works, keep it.
The failure point on the originals seem to be the connection point at the ribbon cable/ brass stud. They can be cleaned up and usually work.

I hope to be able to hook up my original sender to the dash to test before I get to that point. I think I have all the necessary test equipment to check it out. Kind of excited that I'm even to the point where I'm thinking about something to hold fuel instead of the little plastic boat tank I have sitting under the engine right now

You can check it pretty easily outside of the car with an ohmmeter. It's 90 ohms fully up and 0 ohms down. It should track so that half travel is 45, etc.
Or maybe you meant the gauge side. Yeah, you could use an adjustable pot or decade box to check the rest of the circuit up to the gauge. Of course, the sender IS an adjustable pot..so you could just use that outside of the tank.

Thanks for the ohm ratings .... last winter I built a little 10 watt variable box to use to test things ... not a decade box, more of dial box, so I have to use VOM to check the total resistance ... can get close with the graduations on the dials .... but yes, I want to test both the gauge and the sender separately and together. Instrument panel is just attached to the dash .... no connections. Have to pull it out anyway to do some sandblasting.

I happened to purchase with a coupon from Advance vs. Autozone. GM34a tank Spectra, ordered sending unit also. If not a 2bbl, get the sender with return line (two lines).

My original tank has supply line, return line, one vent in the neck, one vent in a forward corner. Does the GM34A have TWO vents in the tank itself?

What do you guys think about a stainless tank? Worth the extra $100 or so?

I could justify a stainless tank if it was a daily driver exposed to the elements or maybe in a high humidity environment.

Not in Central Florida, things do not rust here.

I clearcoated mine and no rust 10 years later. Stays in the garage most of the time though...
