Nice score! I had a 67 gp vert back in the day and I believe it had a 400 with 670 heads and a afb type 4 barrel iron intake,,,not the qjet.

Look under the lip of the valve cover, you'll see a date code cast into the head.

For the year of the block look by the dizzy. Passenger front for application code and then right below that at 90* for a partial vin.

You may already know a C167 casting would decode as March 16th 1967. The partial vin # would match the last of the cars vin.

Cliff Ruggles has a site useful for decoding, http://www.wallaceracing.com/index.html. Other Pontiac specific info there also.

Thanks 4zpeed,

Here is what I was able to find on the engine, although I wasn't able to get a good look at the partial VIN at the front of the engine with the hoses and etc in the way but I'll have to remind myself to look it up later. With regards to the heads I can confirm they are 670 heads, I found the casting # right where it was supposed to be, I also included the #s at the back of the engine next to the distributor as well as the engine code.

About the only way to see the partial VIN when it's in the car is to get underneath. Probably need a paint scraper. It's pretty grimy usually and a faint stamping to boot.

Just a thought: back in the day the stamped in code was often rong and relatively easy to change but changing the date code by the distributor is not.

On '67 cars that is NOT the vin it is the EUN(engine unit #) and should match the # found on the PHS(Pontiac Historical Services)...if it is the original engine.

More than likely the partial VIN won't be on the engine.
1968 they started putting them there.

gtospieg is talking about this number (037374) being the engine unit number. The (XH) is the engine code. See it here. http://www.wallaceracing.com/engine1.htm

John is right, I forgot they didn't start adding a partial vin till 68 although the 400 came out in 67.
Get the PHS papers on the car as suggested to confirm that (engine unit #) is the original engine.

The date code in your pic (J026) October 2 1966 plus the (XH) code means it's a 1967 - 400.

If you follow the link I posted you'll see it's a 1967 - 400ci - 350hp - engine from a Grand Prix.
More than likely your going to find that it is the original engine to the car, how very cool !
I'm going to bet the entire drive line is original to the car... I'm so jealous right now.

The date code for the heads will be under the valve cover, sorry for the confusion.

All original drivetrain.. COOL!

Also, I was able to get some time off of work during my break in between spring/summer quarter so I'll be able to get some wrenching done on the GP. I'm going to focus on getting the brakes functional, any tips on flushing out the hardlines? They appear to be filled with goo

Use a baster to suck the fluid out of the master and then run fresh fluid through all the lines. You may need to replace the master and the wheel cylinders.

To confirm the engine get the PHS documents here http://www.phs-online.com/order.htm, well worth it whether you keep or ever sell the car.

To confirm engine components, heads, intake, carburetor, exhaust manifolds etc. locate the date codes and compare to the block date code.

To confirm other drive train components and locate manufacturing dates and codes for each unit, post your questions in the Street section.

Good advice from "gtospieg", but again, to get a full, diverse and detailed answer to your questions, please post them in the Street section.

There are many members waiting to help you there, introduce yourself, describe the car and acquire any and all the information you desire.

Many don't visit the Lobby, most mainly visit the Street section to post and help others, it's the best section of the forum for information.

Edit - Feel free to post your pics ! They'll fall in love with you man, lol.
Oh! and Jonny, don't forget to mention the theft at $900, unreal...

Thanks guys!

Today I'm starting to work on getting the brakes functional, I think I'll start a new thread over in the Street section like you mentioned to post pictures of progress and to gain more info.

Thanks again for the warm welcome!

I did figure that out, from the casting numbers the motor has 670 heads.
