Question 1969 GP standard rear axle codes - Extra axle I have is stamped 2F.

1969 Shop manual only lists 2D, ZF and ZE as the available regular duty open rear axle codes. Could what appears to be a 2F instead be intended to be a ZF?

It is very clearly a "2" and not a "Z"

Maybe someone at the factory grabbed the wrong stamp for some? Any thoughts???

Thanks!

Kevin.

The A-Body chart shows letter/letter codes. GP chart shows number/letter codes. Here's the GP chart I have.

Thanks Grant, but as I noted, I have the 1969 Pontiac shop manual (original, not a reprint, and I have had it for over 40 years), so I had already had access to that information. What I was looking for is whether anyone has any experience with the axle codes being mis-marked. Same info as the page in my manual. Here is the picture of the axle code:

It is pretty clearly a 2F.

Why do you think it's mis-stamped? 2F is a 3.23 reg duty code for GP shown in my chart.

Well because I guess my original Pontiac Service Manual has a misprint. It is very clearly a "Z" on my copy.

(it's kind of hard to scan such a large manual)
They must have corrected it before they printed the 1972 parts book.

Ah, no wonder! Those "Z" codes are not correct for the GP chart. My chart is from Pontiac MPC.

My manual has a May 1971 print date. It's just wrong. Your parts catalog clearly has the correct information.

There's no lack of misprints in these old books.

We is bin slipstreamed. Note the date of the chart that shows the 2F: 1972. My October 68 Manual says ZF. My question: is that 2F a 10 bolt or a 12 bolt ? YWTK

ps this is a good example of why you cannot always trust factory manuals. The date is important. Have seen the same thing in brochures particularly in 1973 as Many Things Changed.

The 2F rear being discussed is a standard BOP (A body style) 10 bolt... Proper for the '69 GP body from which it was removed. I have a brand "x" (chevy) 12 bolt on that frame now, and I have a guy interested in the 2F rear axle assembly.

I just looked at my '69 Service Manual chart and it shows those "Z" codes as well.
All 10 bolt in '69.

Absolutely!

So much for my belief that the shop manuals are essentially automotive scripture.

OK now on to the '73 SD Grand Prixs.

BTW my 400/4spd/AC 70 Grand Prix had an open 12 bolt. Talk about tire smoke. Have a 3.55 4 pinion in the Judge. Could use an OD but my BW 5 speed is only good for about 300 lb-ft.

My original 4 speed car had a 3:23 4 pinion posi, but the brake cones were completely worn out, it too was pretty good a smoking a single tire.. My plan for this car includes the Tremec TKX, and while my 12 bolt is pretty tight, I am looking at a torsen-type diff for it's ability to deal with widely varied traction environments.

Speaking about 455 SD's, in June 1980 I saw a '73 or '74 Grand Am with GM plates, the NACA scooped hood and 455 SD emblems (stickers) tooling down I-70 between Columbus Ohio, and Dayton, headed Westbound. The car they never released.

I remember 7 white 73 GAs at Milford but AFAIK none were sold to the public since they were never certified (big baggies). March 15, 1973 put an end to the SD in A and G bodies.
