I would have to check bot the square hole is definitely on a '64 so obviously it is early. Round hole was later. I do not think, without looking it up, that the square hole was used in '66.

As far as painted vs. plated.... All NOS/GM ones I have are painted. All "Service Replacements" (aka. aftermarket or NORS) were plated as depicted in the photos.

Well, in typical GM fashion where they cannot make the same part twice for the same car, it appears as though round or square hole is correct for '64 and up. I also had an NOS headlamp assembly for a '64 GTO that had square holes. For someone buying or selling my suggestion is to just make sure all 4 match.

The ones in my 66 are round and were painted. Were painted..... as in there isn't much paint left on them right now. But they are survivors.
