Either finish would be correct as well.

I would have to check bot the square hole is definitely on a '64 so obviously it is early. Round hole was later. I do not think, without looking it up, that the square hole was used in '66.
As far as painted vs. plated.... All NOS/GM ones I have are painted. All "Service Replacements" (aka. aftermarket or NORS) were plated as depicted in the photos. |

Well, in typical GM fashion where they cannot make the same part twice for the same car, it appears as though round or square hole is correct for '64 and up. I also had an NOS headlamp assembly for a '64 GTO that had square holes. For someone buying or selling my suggestion is to just make sure all 4 match.

The ones in my 66 are round and were painted. Were painted..... as in there isn't much paint left on them right now. But they are survivors.
