Not 79-81 T/A or Firebird. I have two switches I pulled out of a 79 T/A and a 81 Firebird. Close but no cigar. The mounts on the T/A Firebird switches are about mid way in the black plastic housing. The resistor is the same silver band on the 79 but my son read 4004 for numbers on the resistor(my trifocals are not in yet). The 81 switch has no resistor. hope my pics help. John.

4004 is a diode. It's a very generic 1A diode that has been in production for years. I don't believe they are required ;-)
It would probably work for the 2nd gen cars, but stick out slightly further than an original based on the plastic tab pictures. |

Ben is right, it's a diode. As cars started having more electronics, diodes were included, wired across relay coils. When relay coils are turned off they create a voltage spike. The diode clamps (suppresses) the spike so it doesn't damage on-board computers.
On an earlier car the presence of the diode will not hurt anything, either. George
