Just thought that I would mention that it clearly states in this brochure that 1970 Firebirds won't be available until early 1970 and that the Firebird shown is from the previous model year. Mentions the same for Camaro and Corvette too. So, definately not trying to pass off 69's as 70's. No printing date on it either Transamric. |

Not to long ago I bought a radio for my 69 and having seen many I was sure it was the one I needed. Anyway on the GM tag on says 02FPB which comes out to a 1970 Pontiac pony car push button.
Could the have been labeling parts for the 1970 modle year ? |

Not for sure, but I'd say it's just when the radio was manufactured.
Since 1969 Model Firebird ran into 1970, I'd say it could be for the 69 but made in 1970.

The part number for a 1969 Firebird AM radio is 92FPB1. The first digit (9) in the part number designates the year of application. The 1970 Firebird AM radio has a part number of 02FPB1. If your radio is labeled 02FPB1 and properly fits in the 1969 dash, it was mis-labled. The 69 and 70 "F" body radios are NOT interchangeable. Aside from script changes, there are numerous differences. The 69 unit also has longer buttons as well as a different cast bezel.

If you were to change the 69 cast bezel and the buttons over it would work as you say. Otherwise, your long lady fingers may not even reach the 70 buttons in a 69 dash. Last edited by Uncle Judge; 04-04-2010 at 11:04 PM. |

no mine has the long buttons so I guess it just must be mislabeled, having looked a few of them over the years I know what a 69 radio looks like , I saw this thread and thought maybe they were making parts for the 1970 that never happened and put it in a 69

I would not be concerned about the label on your radio Skid. The radio itself is correct for a 69 Firebird. |

Uncle Judge, radios are not in my realm of expertise.
But looking at the various pix as posted, I wonder about the identification of the radio by the Service Model No. You indicated that the '70 Radio (for a 2nd gen 'bird) would have a Service Model No. of 02FPB1. But the one with the short buttons shown in the pic shows 12FPB1. According to the decode of the Service Model No. for the '68 up radios, the one in the pic is presumably from a '71. In the case of the late produced '69 Firebird, I suspect that Delco produced radios that were labeled as '70 (02 prefix for the Service Model No.). In other words, once Delco began production of '70 Model Year radios, they may have stopped labeling any of them with the "9" prefix. I think the Product No. may be the more correct p/n to distinguish the actual radio design. In the case of skidjvp's radio, the Product No. is 7307322, same as the one in your pic with the Service Model No. 92FPB1. Presumably, the Product No. 7307322 was never used in a 2nd gen '70 'bird. My suspicion is that for purposes of radio production, Delco considered the late produced F body (Camaro & Firebird) to be '70 Model Year cars, hence the use of the "02" prefix. Perhaps this was one of the confusing legacies of the late decision to continue producing the 1st gen as a '69 rather than giving it a mild facelift and calling it a '70. I kinda wonder if the Service Model No. for the 2nd gen '70 Firebird AM Pushbutton Radio was also labeled 02FPB1 only with a different Product No., or if perhaps the Service Model No. was given a unique revision no. such as 02FPB2 to help make identification easier? |

I parted a 67 400 about 35 yrs ago.
Later after almost all the car was cut up and gone I found a build sheet in the seat springs that indicated car was scheduled for San Fransisco Auto show in Jan 67. I would think that if this car was built and earmarked for a show the 69 would have had the same notes at bottom of build sheet.
