Yes, keep in touch with him and even offer to take him for a ride in one of your classics. Also, order some print catalogs from Ames, PY, Year One, etc, and drop them off to him. That may get him on the road to restore it or he may look at the cost and decide it's not worth it.

Definatly keep in touch with him, And alittle late to the show but here are a couple of pic's of my 69 Sprint FB, Eng Compt no A/C, Sprint Emblem on Rocker panel, No sprint Stripes, and the hood will have 4.1 OVERHEADCAM emblems on it.

There is alot of things not stock under the hood, but the heater box is stock.

160mph with 3.55 gear and 25.5" tire =7500 RPM

not to mention that a 230HP Sprint doesnt have the torque needed to overcome wind resistance

Ask if he'll put it in his will to you.
Because he is gonna die with that car, if the car makes it much longer.

Next person who finds it will probably steal it and part it out.
You'll probably get a phone call or a search warrant. ouch

He must be close to 70 now, or over.
To be stationed // occupying Germany in the heat of Vietnam era (69), he musta already been enlisted and serving in Germany before Vietnam draft got heavy. Or he would have been in Vietnam.

A have a friend who will be 70 this year. He did the Germany thing too.

Cammer and SE428 are right - 69 Bird had 160mph speedo.
That thing has never been pegged. Unless it got stabbed with a Peg. lol
yeah, the guy's 66. and i think every few months i'll call and ask if he's ready to sell or if he needs any help fixing it(he won't). just to try to keep my foot in the door.

I've been lurking on this thread for quite a while and that's the line I've been waiting on. Knew it was coming!
To be sure though, you have done well to get him talking about it and it sounds like he may have taken a liking to you. Usually, if you can get a car like this, that's the way it'll happen. It's not about money for a guy like that but it's about who will wind up with the car. He wants it to be loved. You may get it yet!

my dad and i both thought it would end this way, but didn't have anything to lose, so we figured it was worth a shot. yeah, i don't think he hates me, at least. we talked for about half an hour, ragged on chryslers a little bit, i told him about my 2 cars, so it was a good phone call, overall. i think i'm going to try again around the new year, but when i do i'll first offer to help him, then i'll ask him to sell. this way it seems like i'm more interested in the car's well being than in my owning it, and hopefully that'll persuade him to start thinking about letting it go.

i perfectly understand his sentimental value, i'm the same way with my wagon. i've had 3 people offer to buy my wagon, plus it gets constant attention, and i always say i won't sell cause i know i'll regret it sooner or later. that's what happened with my dad and his 6 GTOs and '70 formula, as well as the numerous cars he had a chance to buy(such as the $6,000 original 440 4 speed superbird that he didn't buy because of the fist sized dent on the rear quarter in the early '80's). so, this '69 firebird's story isn't over just yet, i'm just going to give it some time. i'll focus on my '72 firebird in the meantime, and hopefully by the time the guy sells the car to me, i'll have at least gotten the heavy duty work on my '72 finished.
