Default Long Island Needs A Drag Strip

For those of you who don't know about this, a group is trying, and making progress I might add, to get a drag strip back on Long Island! Today they successfully got Suffolk County to appoint a committee to search for land. I just hope this is not a 9 month project to appease us and then say "oh well, we tried but it's not possible." Which could be the outcome. But we can only hope!

Hope it's more than lip service - would get a lot of illegal racing off the streets too.

Yup. LI has a deep history in racing. And based on the car shows, cruises and all the Facebook "clubs" there is a pent up demand. Add to that the fact that anyone car select from an array of fast cars from every manufacturer these days, and yes, there is a NEED for a drag strip.

I personally have never lived closer than 80 miles from a drag strip, so this would be VERY cool for me!

And who knows, maybe a nice new venue on LI would draw in even a few from CT

This would be quite an accomplishment given today's regulations. I recall Raceway Park in Englishtown being surrounded by tomato fields but as the developers moved closer through the decades the owners had a steady battle with the new community. Not exactly fair to a thriving existing business. It seems that you definitly have some momentum. Anyway I think this New York track is relatively new and I'd like to check it out sometime. skyview is in my neck of the woods track is realy run down and word is that this year it will only be open for test and tune. the also have a concrete track for the roundyround guys but it looks like it wont open this year. the owner has turned a lot of people off because he didn't have money to pay the winners after the races

Thumbs up Blast from the past...

Not something you hear much of these days (NEW TRACK) that is.
I hope it bears some fruit, would be cool to see an OLD is NEW type resurgence in the motor sport.
I'm not a racer but have been drawn to sights and sounds for as long as I can remember and a lot of my local car buds like to so I'm always up for a trip to the track.

I hope it all works out.

Grew up not far from Amarillo Dragway TX as a kid, Older brother and I would hang at a local coffee shop on weekends hoping to run into some of big names of the day, man I wish I had saved some of those trinkets.

Moved back to NJ not far from Englishtown, Got into Pontiac's after a few swap-meets and the rest is history as they say. As mentioned above when the Benny's started to move down they really tried to squeeze the track out with all the new housing being jammed right up to the edges. I'm glad they never could shut it down but there were some times when it looked grim.

Moved to VB and VMP is within a few hours attended many drag events with the locals.
Then came Northeast down in NC which is an hour so its nice to have both sides covered, and I feel for you guys that have to travel long distances just to get some wheel time in.

BEST OF LUCK
I'll be rooting for you.

our governor (not mine) spent millions building a rest stop on the expressway to help truckers out on exit 54 or so and after all said an its done signs all over the entrances say no truckers allowed and you can't even afford to buy a drink there $3 iced teas and organic food courts $14 sandwiches someone please get rid of him and blasio and
(make Long island great again)

LI Needs a Dragstrip was just on local TV (Ch 10) and Radio (FM 90.3) Motormouth.

I really can't understand why Riverhead is so against using Calverton land - all that empty Gruman property complete with air strip! I think there's 600 acres there and a drag strip "only" needs about 100.

They were talking about trying to make it so that related businesses could be housed on/within the drag strip. How great would that be if repair and parts stores are within the complex?! Go race. Break or wear something out, go buy new ones, continue racing. Fail tech inspection because your helmet is not up to latest Snell standards? Buy a new one! Or maybe have private test-tune times with speed shops on premises.

I'm sure places like S-K Speed would love to have retails space there.

There are a few issues with Calverton, but it is not off the table. There is another spot in Yaphank they are looking at. There plan is to dig the track down 30 feet, have the stands and parking above the track to keep noise down.
There is a lot more to the story and would take me way to long to type.
It is moving in the right direction.
WE NEED BIG TURN OUTS TO THE MEETINGS TO KEEP SHOWING INTEREST.
Even if you are out of state, If I am friends with you on FB and share a survey please take it and let everyone know we do need a drag strip.

JS, how can we keep abreast of these meetings? My son (19) is in the Long Island Car Club (seems mainly late model stuff) but they have a large membership and would also be interested in moving this idea forward

They use facebook a lot.

I know those street clubs use FB and Instagram a lot to communicate and host impromptu meetings often. They should really help and back this group to get a track here.

Also, there are currently two polls being conducted by LI Business News and Patch papers. HAVE THOSE MEMBERS VOTE on both! Also tell him to have those members show up to the town meetings for quiet strength in numbers.

Please, EVERYONE here, please vote on these two polls, even if you are not local:
http://libn.com/2017/02/08/the-poll-...-racing-strip/

and also here (the poll is at the bottom following the story):

http://patch.com/new-york/medford-ny...lk-county-poll

The key is to have VOTERS show the politicians this is important to them. Nothing gets a politician motivated more than voters!
