Default Will this posi unit fit my car?

I've been looking to upgrade the factory rear in my 68 Firebird. My car has the stock 8.2 one leg rear with 2:73 gears.

I found this 8.2 posi unit with 3:08 gears listed on ebay but I have no idea if it's correct for my application. Any help?

if you have a 4 speed 400 I think youll like a 336 better.
This posi unit shown is what many consider a light duty one(2 pinion)

My preference is a 3:55 gear. 3:36 would be fine too.

My car has a very mild cam and is only a weekend cruiser. I'm not worried about long trips or highway cruising. I can score a complete posi unit along with an install kit and 3:55 gears on ebay for around $700.00. I have a shop locally that will set up the rear for me for around $350.00 which puts my total cost at around $1000.00 to do my rear. I was just scrounging around trying to see if there is a cheaper route. I asked if anyone local had a complete 8.2 rear but couldn't score anything local.

I guess my best bet is to pony up the coin for the new posi unit and gears.

I'm in the same boat as you. Somewhere along the way somebody put a 2:56 rear in my '69 400/4spd. It really has to go! I've been estimating about $1500 for the gears, Eaton posi, install kit, and set up. Hopefully I'll get this done this spring. I've been trying to get recommendations for a local shop to do the work.

You guys should contact PY member monzaz. He can supply a ready to bolt in 8.5, or 8.2 if you're a purist, for what you will spend on parts and labor. He does excellent work and will also supply the parts you need if you want to build it yourself. He also has a website: jdrace.com

the eBay posi carrier is one of the weakest ever put in any of the different configurations of GM A-body rears. In a single rib gray iron 8.2 Buick housing or a gray iron Pontiac 8.2 housing, better hope that torque never reaches the ground & the car hooks well. For most applications, Pontiac dumped the 2 pinion units for '66. Instead of servicing parts for the 2 pinion 8.2 , dealers were instructed to replace damaged 2 pinion Safe-T-Track carriers with new 4 pinion carriers.
