Default 1972 restomod Trans Am done right on BaT

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...omments-anchor

Such a nice build. Must be a blast to drive. Almost all the right mods.

All I would do is rip out that 10 bolt, and those stock leaf springs, and put in a 4 link with a 12 bolt. Then it would be ideal.

This BAT car description sure knows what words to drop. That said It does NOT have a Gardner Exhaust system. This car looks like one built at 11:1 for e-85 fuel only a few years back..

Adding those wheels WITHOUT a suspension mod to speed it up results in a extremely harsh ride where tires don't stay on the road with any imperfections in the road. May look good.. Drive it on a normal road.
This is why GM didn't add those wheels till STRUTS were in the cars.

Beautiful TA.

Curious what the 'official' definition for a restomod is? Drivetrain swap? Suspension/tire mods? Anything not original?

For instance, my 70 GTO has original drivetrain (engine/trans/rear end (added LSD)), but tubular control arms, 4 disc conversion (was front disc/rear drum) with hydroboost, quick ratio steering box, coilovers, 18" wheels, DUI, LEDs. I consider it a restomod with original drivetrain.

I'm thankful it does NOT have a LS engine....

Looking at the made-up word, to me, a restomod means a restoration with modifications. Very open ended. Like was posted, the first thing I generally see is the OE drivetrain tossed in the trash and some LS incarnation scabbed in for that "modern" feel. So in that sense restomod could mean, restoration with modern running gear. In the end, I don't think it has any real meaning at all. The 72 Trans Am by my definition, would be a restomod and a very nice one IMO.

And, thankfully, we have a choice to use the LS if we prefer. To each his own. In reality, an LS engine would have taken this beautiful car over the top.

The LS engine is the BEST engine GM has ever produced, and GM is the same company that produced the Pontiac engines. It is worthy of being installed in ANY car, and will be an improvement over whatever was originally installed.

Just quit with your efforts to disgrace those of us who have installed LS engines in one or two of our cars.

Tell you what, if you have an LS engine that you would like to trade, I have a P400, a P455, and a P350 that I'll trade you head up.

You don't like LS engines in Pontiacs, GOT IT! But some of us do. It ain't 1972 anymore.

^^^ what he said.

A 1967-74 Stratostreak scales in around 660 IIRC, the LS3 in my T/A just under 400 - huge difference in handling; agile versus plowing thru corners. The battery being relocated to the right trunk makes this even more so.

Not disagreeing, I wonder what aluminum heads, intake, water pump, radiator plus a mini starter, light flywheel and headers do to help the old Stratostreak on the scales or in a nose heavy Firebird.

While anyone can do whatever they want to their car, if one loves an LS (errr...small block chebby) so much why not just buy a bew caddy, vette, or camaro and call it a day.

I much prefer seeing and and would only ever have a traditional Pontiac engine pushed to it's limit in a vintage Pontiac.

And before someone uses the weight against a traditional Pontiac engine, well, you can get a new aluminum IAII or MR1A block.

Putting an LS is a vintage car looks wrong and the car loses it's soul. And in most cases, torque - which is what makes a Pontiac a Pontiac.

I did all of that on my 71 Lemans, did not help that much.

I like a nice untouched original car.. but... I'd much rather have a restomodded car that handles... stops and can cruise 80+ down the freeway than a car that is only good in a straight line a 1/4 mile at a time.

Sure you can. But it is not VINTAGE Pontiac, it is AFTERMARKET! It was NOT produced by PONTIAC or gm. Looks are subjective, but perhaps you should familiarize yourself with the potential of the LS engines.

I own a 2004 GTO that I bought new in June of 2004. It currently has 108k miles and only THREE bolts on this engine have ever been loosened. The two that hold the thermostat and the oil drain plug, that's it.

I,m not advocating that everybody should replace their Pontiac engine with an LS. But quit with the efforts to shame others who choose differently. It is not an irreversible move and one could always switch back. But the car itself is what we truly love and in my opinion, the LS only makes it more enjoyable the same way aftermarket suspension and brake components make it safer.

Also, as beautiful as the BAT car is, I personally would take a different approach. But the only reason I even replied in this thread is because a certain poster constantly reminds us of his disdain for non-Pontiac engines in Pontiacs. I respect his right to feel that way, but it is tiresome.
