STOCK 403 '79 T/A - at the track and on the dyno. Guess the results
A good friend of mine. Kevin, has a 27k original mile 403 WS7 (WS6 suspension, but with rear drum brakes) 2.73 posi Trans Am.
The ONLY mod that has been done, is the scoop is cut open. Untuned carb, original exhaust with the original pellet catalytic converter still in place. Timing set at factory specs. 245/60-15 BFG Radial T/As. Back when these cars were new, we did not have chassis dyno's and no track was really convenient, so I always wondered just how good/bad these cars performed when TRULY "stock". Kevin's car is the closest to showroom stock that I've been around in a long time, so I talked him into going to the track and to let me make a few dyno pulls :-) We ran it at the track last Friday, and did the dyno today. I'll post the results later, as I wanted everyone to have a chance to take a guess. Track had a DA of 1200' when we got there, and was around 700 when he made his best pass. Dyno is a DynoJet using their "STD" correction factor. EDIT: I'll ask Kevin to verify, but I believe the race weight was right at 3900. Guess away :-)

The above guess sounds good to me also.
It’s really too bad that Old’s put such crappy heads on those 403 motor’s because there Bore to Stroke ratio they have is darn good.

My cousin had a '78 T/A, base 400. Automatic, 2.56 posi. We took it to a track one summer, around '85. His car was stock, but the cat was removed and it had a basic 2.25" dual exhaust system on it. I don't remember the MPH, but it ran 15.7s.

That is what I was thinking, low 16's and mid 100's on dyno.

Worst nightmare
Back when these cars were new I used to hunt them mercilessly.
I loved it when the girlfriend of the owner was sitting in the passenger seat. Friday and Saturday nights were the best times to find these cars running around with their owners not expecting any real competition from some old Bug. Note the dial-in on the side window. Orange County International Raceway 1978, I was 18 at the time.

A nice breakdown of which version got what gears here: https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...bQJxV0s4zmZHfM I've seen 2.73 geared 403's, but never seen one with 3.23's - THAT would be interesting to see at the track.

I bought a '79 T/A 6.6 litre WS-6, 4 speed Trans Am in '83 from the original owner with 22K miles on it for my future wife. Rear axle was 3.23 posi, absolutely all stock, no nothing. Took it to Island Dragway in New Jersey, don't know the elevation, but not much, definitely under 1000'. Best I could get was 16.1 sec at 88 mph. I made 4 changes to it. Opened the shaker scoop, straight piped the cat, lighter distributor advance springs, and richer secondary rods in the Q-Jet. The car felt WAY faster. The engine would pull right to 5000 rpm instead of falling off at 4000. I was hoping for 15.0 or less at about 94/95 mph , but my 18 year old BIL spun the car on a wet day and wrecked it before I had a chance to run it again. The wife replaced it with a Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Back in the day racing a hot Bug on the street was usually a bad idea. They get traction. There was a guy who had a 10 sec Giah at our track.
Had a bus engine in it. Big bore kit, duel carbs. |
