Default 67 Gto engine unit number

The engine unit number on front of the block should always match the Phs billing sheet engine unit number correct? Are there any instances where it would not? Trying to determine a numbers matching car and they do not match.

Generally, yes.

What are the euns on both?
(also date code on block)

There can be misprints, sometimes zeros, etc.

Billing history says eun ws0957, I think it is Fremont built car, z code for plant code. Number on block is 187754. Don't have date code on block yet. I am thinking not numbers match, the weird number on billing history confused me.

Thanks for the pics.
(sorry I didn't email you back also, Mike)

I think the Z-Fremont did some strange things there.
It seems they did the Fremont EUN like yours and what 60sstuff posted.
Not sure how they got the 0957 in your case.

Originally I thought it might be part of the body number but don't think so.
Or the production number for the day/week.

But it seems at least for 1967 the number isn't the actual number on the block.

John,

Sorry as I only have what I posted (no engine block stamp on that last one).

Thanks for "your" input!

Chris

I called PHS when I ran my Fremont built car.

On my billing card it only lists the first 4 digits of the EUN omitting the last 2.
237159 = on block
2371 = on card

He said that is correct for Fremont and the motor is original.

Vidguy,
You've got me wondering about my car. My 67 was built in Fremont and the billing sheet says ww2230, but the engine # on the block says ww223087. There could be 99 other ww2230xx blocks. Seems to me the billing sheet should leave the letter code off and show the 6 digit number or show the whole engine unit number.

That's how Fremont printed them out. Sometimes they omitted the EUN on the billing history.

Interesting they would leave the engine # off. My build sheet(early 67.) only shows the engine #, not sure when they started including the xmission #.

It depended on the Plant , sometimes.
My 67 WS car from PMD Plant lists both unit numbers , engine and trans.
Its either March or April 67 build.
They didn't include the block code alpha , only Fremont did it that way.

OG68 posted an example from 1968.
Some of those in 1968 varied wildly . Some used all 00000's for EUN in 1968.
The 68's could vary from plant to plant , and even variations within the same plant depending on what months the car was built.

Aside from whatever internal process might have used
them, I suspect some offices just stopped caring about
EUNs after they started stamping VINs?

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to that.
But it just mainly varied from plant to plant on the EUN / TUN , and when or how it was noted.
We have come across a rare few 69 BHC's (not invoices) and they had EUN on them.
It is suspected the BHC forms continued until at least 1970 , but perhaps much longer.

One of the EUN's biggest roles was for tracking defects and recalls etc...
Service Bulletins would cite EUN's of certain ranges that were - or might be - affected.
So they were intended to be logged.

For us , its a second form of confirmation.
It would catch a lot of restored cars off guard - if the BHC's with EUN's magically became obtainable tomorrow.
Restampers wouldn't be able to correctly guess the exact correct EUN like they can VIN.
But they won't ever resurface - its all gone now and PHS didn't get them.

My '67 is a late June 1967 from the Pontiac plant, has the 6 digit EUN and the Trans Unit Number on the billing history card.

Yep. 19 years old and stationed at Vandenberg AFB. Had ordered the car in January and six weeks later the dealer called on the second day of my nine day shift and said it was in. Had to wait a week to get down to pick it up. I still remember that it was a very long week. Here's a photo of the car with paper plates on the base at the entrance to the Atlas missile gantries.

Thanks for sharing the picture and telling us about it.
