I never used to care for the hood tachs much but they have started to grow on me, besides I already have a working clock in my dash . I was wondering where is a good place to get an aftermarket one thru? Do all places carry the same ones? Are they worth getting or is an original better. Id rather just drop a one time 240 dollar payment instead of rebuilding an original for probably more $$. Thanks for any info on this.

428-
That's what I did on my 69. I bought mine from Performance Years (our board host) and it works perfectly. I checked it against the dwell meter tach and it was right-on as far as being accurate. (At least as accurate as the meter!)

It looked like it was built better and sealed up underneath better than the original one. I would guess with all the hood-slammin' it will last longer than the original because of being sealed up better.

I have been thinking about putting a hood tach on my 72 GTO mainly cause you cant read or hardly see the indash tach but what to do with the indash tach? Dont think it would look too cool with two tachs on it.

Thanks for the replies guys, I think I'll order one up. Does it come with a full harness?

Txbobcat: Get the clock to take its place, or theres a blockoff cover if you dont mind.

Nope, on 69-72(68 too probably but the gauges are a little different in these so I dont know) you either have a clock or a tach on the right side(or a blockoff), and then the other 2 pods are actually one peice so you really cant put anything over there. So If you added a hood tach you could definately put in a clock. I put a quartz kit in my clock and it works great. I see clocks on ebay all the time for these, and I cant remember where I got the quartz kit but it wasnt that tough to put it in. Hope this helps some.

Thanks 428 you brightened up my day. I will check ebay and get a clock then order the hood tach. I have wanted one of them since the first time I saw them. How much is the indash tach worth? Got any idea?

I bought one and put it on my bird works great has 2 bulb instead of 1 and the lights are on when your ignition is on to keep the condisation(sp) from building up inside.

Ranked first in most useless info presented, and dang proud of it..

Not sure on the value of the indash tach, but if it works it should be worth a little. The only bad part is its not easy to get them out of the dash, may require removing the dash. Dont want to rain on your parade, but it definately isnt easy to get to. If anything you will know your car better afterwards

also thanks for the info 69firebird, im looking forward to getting one now.

I bought mine from PY also.I'm very happy with it.It comes with 2 bulbs instaed of one and it stays lit even with the lights turned off.But it fit perfectly in the factory hole in my hood.Works with the factory wiring harness (except you have to plug it into a power source that comes on when the key is on, instead of when the lights come on ,or else the tach won't work).

Hope this helps,

Charlie

hey, Txbobcat:

Here is a clock on ebay now:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33695

This is out of a Grand Prix and the only difference is it will have blue inserts on the bulb holes in the back to give the lights a tint that the gto's dont have. You can just chip these out to make it look right.

my tach came with harness, 2 bulbs for the 68 model and template for the hole. The 67 models only have 1 bulb.

tx have u heard of 'sniper'. Killer way to win at the end.
