2. With a tensioner, the belt cant be over-tightened. So bearings like water pump, PS and Alternator have a longer life. Over tightened v belts put a lot of strain on components.

3. Carry 1 belt with you. Most old cars have 3-4 belts. You know what a PITA it is to replace 4 belts, or to change 1 you may have to remove 3 ; )

4. The Multi Groove belt takes up less room. you dont need a 3 groove v pulley anymore.
HIS Rebuttal:

1. I could drop the PMD Vee AC belt, or the ALT belt, or the Water Pump only belt and still get home. Cannot do that with the single Serpentine belt.

2. I've had tensioners go squeaky. Otherwise fine. We've learned how to tighten Vee Belts to just right.

3. I've carried the "last squeaky Serpentine Belt in the trunk" but Serpentine belt replacements have been to BUY new to stop the squeak & squeal.. So the spare belt was moot, for more than several squeal-renewal cycles.

4. about the same space, Vee maybe less because of the 3- level depth PMD used for AC cars. Seems the Serpentine pulleys have a lifetime much less than the Vee pulleys, in tearm of quiet operation.

Otherwise good Thread, because I've had Serpentine upgrade on me project list for 20 years, but no implementation as yet, due to 95 Lincoln 4.6 experience with run-time to first squeal RTTFS

Nice job Danny! I was wondering if it worked out for ya. Nice vid. Thats a really clean installation. I had to dig back thru the posts to remember how you lucked out with how that tensioner bolt spacing. Good work finding that. Glad to see it up and running.

Thumbs up

Yes, very clean and neat! How much tensioner deflection do you get when revving the engine quickly?
Considering using that NAPA 38190 tensioner you have instead of the one I used, which required a homemade welded bracket and three extra long water pump bolts.

right on! thanks!
i am not revving the engine quickly.
i am in the home stretch of a 15 year, 100% complete, frame-off restoration of this GTO... and i'm not pushing anything too much.
the rebuilt 400 is barely broke in as i just started it on christmas day so it barely has 20 minutes of run time on it at this point.
the belt is very tight and i haven't observed any perceptible deflection at the tensioner under load in the 1000 rpm to 2000 rpm range.
i will continue to update this thread with my progress as i continue to move forward with the project.
thanks for your interest!

I'm having some issues locating the pulleys for this set up. To my knowledge there isn't a 1985 Crown vic. 1992 being the first year. Is there an updated list that I'm missing other then the one on page 4?

Power steering pulley- Mid 80,s Chevy truck........junkyard
Alternator Pulley- 1998 VW jetta 2.0..............junkyard
Power steering spacer plate- This has to be made from 5/8” flat stock. I chose 6061 aluminum as it is easy to work with........................can be purchased from speedymetals.com
Alt bracket spacer- 3/8” ID x 3/4” OD x 5/8” length …....can be purchased from aluminumspacers.com
Alt bracket spacer- 5/16” ID x 3/4” OD x 5/8” length.....can be purchased from aluminumspacers.com
Idler Pulley- I got mine from a subaru that just happened to be easily accessible. I made a spacer and found a suitable bolt. One can use any idler they choose as long as its spaced and fastened properly. If you choose one with a larger diameter you will need to locate it a little further from the power steering pulley than I did in my install.

Fasteners needed:
3/8”x16x6-5/8” bolt
3/8”x16x4-1/2” bolt
3/8”x16x1-5/8” bolt.........not in the photo
5/16”x18x2” bolt

Much more to follow...
Is this the updated list? Listed is a 1985 Crown vic. Could you mean 95?

I'm guessing we are talking about an 1985 ford LTD. Sorry took me a minute to connect the dots.

Yea, it was definitely all mid 80s crown vics that I pulled several from but you are also correct..."Ford LTD Crown Vic". Im guessing the "crown victoria" is the trim package.

Default Ford Crank Pulley cross over number

Nothing like bringing a thread back from the dead in 2020. If you're like me and working on this project it might be helpful for you to know that the part number referenced on the Ford F-250 diesel pulley is in fact an International number. I was able to cross this over to a Ford number and it comes up as F2TZ-6A312-B. So if you're looking for that pulley, plug the Ford number in and they come up on Ebay.

Hope this helps!
Derek

Bringing this one back for more info. The Ford F-250 pulley that is referenced above should only be considered for use with the shorter water pump snout in 1968 / 69. The correct Ford number for the deeper crank pulley which lines up with the 4.5 inch water pump snout is W0133-1699245. This pulley was used on 740 vehicles from 1987-1996. So options for this are plentiful. You can buy a brand new one on Ebay as of the writing of this post for $36.00
