Interesting option I haven’t seen?
I saw a 65 Grand Prix today and it had an option I wasn’t familiar with….. There is some sort of vent in the dash pad that looks factory near the driver. The guy said his dad used to smoke and the smoke would get sucked into this vent?
Has anyone seen anything like this? Mods- feel free to move to the full size section but I thought this might cross into other models/years. |

Sounds similar to the vaccuum ashtray option on some GM cars.

That's a new one to me. I checked the accessories brochure over on the Old Car Manual Project website, and while it doesn't have anything about a smoker's vent, interestingly an image of it shows up in the picture for the radio reverb option - look at the image in the upper left of page 12: http://oldcarbrochures.org/United%20...atalog-12.html It certainly looks like a factory part and not something from the aftermarket. I used to have a 1965 GP myself so I tend to pay attention to any of them that I see at shows, and I've never seen any with a vent like that.

my landlord had a 57 nomad it had a vacuum ashtray and a jar out
on the inner fender,,,, we started the car one day during a tune up and he unscrewed the jar and put his palm over the hole,,, it left a cool red mark on his palm .... almost thought I needed to turn the car off for him to get it to release ... funny as heck ............. |

I'm not familiar with the GP dash. Is there already a pre-made cut out in the dash? Do other options exist that require that much modification (in this case the dash) to install.
Just checked the link Stuart provided very cool

There isn't any pre-made cut out in the dash pad, so it's something that would have to be added.

I’m going with the vacuum ash tray as that’s what the owner thought it was? Nothing I’ve ever seen and I have looked at hundreds of 65’s over the years.

Would it be listed on the PHS?

Had a '65 Bonneville wagon with so many factory options the window sticker was 2 pages long, also had this in the dash pad. Never knew what it was for.

I have no idea if it's orginal or not, but it's very cool!

Like to see how it all works. I am betting due to pics above that it is a Dealer item.

I’ve never seen that option before either, but I wish my parent’s had one in their cars when I was growing up! CoUgH, HaCk
I’m wondering about it’s vacuum requirements: “Hello Comp Cams? Does this grind have enough vacuum to suck the smoke out of my ashtray?” LMAO Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Part of the Verba-phonic setup?
Looks like most of the pics with that dash have the switch below it?

The Verbra-Phonic option was basically a box with a spring inside, along with a simple amplifier circuit that used a couple transistors and a few other components. There wouldn't be any need for a dash vent, so whatever that thing is it shouldn't have anything to do with the radio.

Reverb mounted in the trunk under package tray. Only had wiring and switch. It delayed the sound to rear speaker.

Now that's a thought...ATC does need to monitor interior temperature somehow. However, I've only seen automatic temperature control once, on a 1966 Bonneville, and that was nearly 50 years ago, so I don't remember if there was any sort of dash vent.

I have the separate 1965 ATC service manual manual around here. I will look for anything like that in there. I just can't imagine the dealer carving into a padded dash pad to add something like this? Very cool item though. It would need some ducting as well.

It just about has to be ATC related
If it were an obscure option or dealer add-on , all the big timer fullsize guys would have turned it into a buzz-word long ago. However, it does surprise me that i have never seen it or noticed it on a 65-66 anywhere before either. And i sold lots of big car stuff in the 80's & early 90's in my junkyarding days. So i always examined every Pontiac i encountered. |
