Default WIW question - 1973 SD455 auto with a/c

In light of the discussion going on regarding the rough 73 SD in the lobby, I thought I'd start a new thread here.

I'm getting close to retirement, and would like to retire to the NC mountains. Several months ago, a guy I knew years ago when I was living outside of Charlotte contacted me to ask if I was still into early Trans Ams. He moved to the NC mountains and is involved in real estate. He is interested in a possible trade for my red 73 SD toward a cabin in the mountains.

My 73 SD is all numbers matching. It has always been garaged, and is rust-free. The guy I bought it from was affiliated with one of the NC based NASAR teams, and it was painted in the NASCAR shop. I bought it around 1989, drove it a couple of years, then let it sit in a basement garage when I moved to Raleigh NC area. I didn't have adequate storage at my new home, so it stayed in the basement.

It is red with tri-color interior (black/white with red carpet). It has a non-original intake, but the original intake came with the car. It has the original carb, distributor, exhaust manifolds, tranny, PCV valve setup, etc.

The driver's seat needs some springs (the previous owner was on the heavy side) and new seat covers. The trunk pan is perfect. It ran great and the a/c worked. It has an aftermarket radio, but the dash hasn't been cut.

It's been sitting since probably 1991 in a basement. The first photos were taken about two years ago. The photos in the reply were taken around 1991.

It has around 80K original miles, no rust, and other than the muffler and tailpipes, intake, and radio, it is all original. It has not been cranked since around 2001 or 2002.

Any thoughts on what it's worth? After Autofair, I'm going to spend a weekend looking at some of the properties he has available to see if he has anything I like. I hadn't really planned on selling or trading, but if it cuts a couple of years off how long I have to work before retiring I would consider it. I still have a couple of other cars.

Thanks for looking,

Mike

Face to Face like the way real people buy cars -

As is 40 -50k . You'll get lowballers and flippers @ 35k.

Roadworthy running and driving - spotlessly fluffed inside out and new tires 55-60k

Going to depend how well it actually runs out and what the interior condition really is -
it could go higher based on those. as much as 65-70k max

An eBay deal after a super fluff and dazzling description might get higher bids than a face to face.
But in the end you usually have to get paid in person and do title work.
And the car scrutinized.
Buyers can take a walk on their bid.

Just my opinion , not interested in a debate with anyone other than the owner.
The old pictures look pretty nice.
The new pictures look - not so good.
Its all in the details once its cleaned up , running and scrutinized.

I've done this before with a similar unit.
Leave a little breathing room and you sell it vs. listing it again and again and again over months and months.

Lots of years in a basement near the floor could really mess up the underside. The underside could mean a 10K difference in price IMHO. Good luck!

I think the bottom side is pretty clean.

In summer 1991, I started working a temporary assignment in Raleigh NC. I moved to Raleigh in early 1992, so the last time I had it out of the basement was probably some time in 1991. I know it hasn't been washed since then.

Thanks for the input.

Mike

I don't know where you guys are looking, but I personally haven't seen any 73 sd cars for 50k lately. the last 73 I sold was a Brewster green auto car that was very solid and not beat up dent wise but needed totally restored and it did a lot more than 50k

I'm not defending or debating - just stating opinion.

i don't think anyone is an "expert" anymore on 73 SD prices .
Project , Driver , Resto'd - or otherwise.

B.Green has become the ultra premium these days - different level somehow.
You almost have to put them in a separate category now.

Back when Poncho-Mike and I bought our 73 SD cars , B.Green was the bastard color to most of the masses. Neither of us even wanted a Green one. But for the right price (low-low) i'm sure we would have pulled a trigger on one.

Can remember Mike selling a Brewster 73 Formula 455 4speed (non-SD) w/o engine for asking of $1500 . Would have bought it in an instant - but it was that damd green. lol
Which was big part of him flipping it.

I try to keep my finger on the pulse of all the publicly sold 73 SD cars that i can.
Have been for decades. Its the best i can do.

Ram4king knows of evidently a fair number of Restored 73 SD Auto's under 100k.
That are not selling.
Maybe none of them are Green.

There has to be breaking points somewhere to maintain a reality.

Looks to have been stored well. Give it a good wash and give it a new coat of polish. I am sure that paint will be as good as it was when you parked it.

Dought much has changed on the interior being its not in the sunlight and its nice and dry.

73 prices have been strong of late and if its running and driving i would want 6 figures.

And another opinion , while i'm doing opinions.

I respect your opinion - and even further respect you for being man enough to put real numbers up on the board.

Seems to take a hell of a lot of courage to do that anymore.

I know a guy with a camaro collection of about 10 rare cars. He’s in his late 60’s and needs the money and wants to retire. He’s been in sell mode for about 10 years to wind down his collection. He is very proud of his cars and I believe his prices are over retail. So in the last 10 years he has sold one car for his above retail number. I told him at your pace you may sell another car or two while you are alive for what you want. The rest are going to be sold by Dana mecum when your are gone. Just because you sell one car for a crazy number doesn’t mean they all will sell for that much. Mike I think you have a pretty good idea of what your car is worth. I don’t think the value has changed at all in the last 10 years.

I think it is $60K minimum. There are a couple of friends who think more, one thinks less.

I haven't gotten any use out of it in almost thirty years, so I will see what kind of properties he has and what value he places on them. Just about any property worth owning will probably be in the $200K range, so I'll just wait and see.

Basically agree with Chuck on the past 10 year range .
I caught the tail end of "the bubble" when sold mine .
In general - Red and White Auto's are at about the same point again now.

Car itself brought - lets say - 57k
Let a collection of NOS and excellent used parts go with it valued between 3-5k
depending whether you figure lowsides or highsides.
Only 2 pieces were needed by the car.
The rest was upgrade stuff that didn't apply to original build.

Full ticket was 60k .

Had 3 prominent PY'ers play dippsy-doodle behind the scenes before i put it public.
Be prepared for that. They all had basically the same methods.
It was a HOOT !

Listed publicly on here late one night @ 61,900
Next morning had a contact.
24 hours later had a deposit in my bank account.

just friendly advice here -
Get that SD cleaned up before you do anything else.
And get it running.
Mine never saw that much dirt in its whole lifetime.

Don't bring Mr.Realestate over to see it like it sits and expect any reasonable outcome.

I'd had a local guy beg for first rights on mine for years and years.
Gave it to him
He offered 35k
He barely got back in his car quick enough

Baron,

Thanks for the info. I plan to take a trip to the NC mountains after Fall Autofair and view some of the properties he has.

I definitely plan to clean the car up before I show it to him. The house is a brick ranch, and the basement door is in the center of the rear of the house. There is a 24 x 40 garage built on the back where I store four more cars, so to get the 73 SD out, I have to move two other cars. If we go further, I will move the other two cars out so I can get the SD cleaned up, maybe even get it running. I tried to crank it a couple of years ago, but the starter was dragging and wouldn't spin the engine fast enough to fire. The car is 120 miles from where I currently live, and it's not like I have a lot of free time to spend on it.

The guy I'm dealing with knew the white SD 4-spd and the red 73 SD from when I lived outside of Charlotte. He looked me up to see if I had any leads outside of what he sees on Ebay or CL. If he low-balls or inflates the values of his properties beyond what I think the market rate is, I will walk away.

Mike

Looks like the type of guy who will park a car for years in the dust, not care for it at all to even throw a cover over it or dust it down for photos, but then expects top dollar in return for his efforts.
