Default Delco Radio

If the GTO's were supposed to come with black buttons on the radios, why do so many have chrome buttons in them now. I can't imagine they were replaced with the chrome button ones, there are so many of them.

I routinely used the big car buttons on me Delco Stereos on my personal vehicles. Sold them all. Maybe many of us did that enough to become a " thing to do". Trendy? or thing of the past because it's not original.

No more Delcos for me except the Caddy motorized tuner to support auto seek/scan the radio dial. and has Chrome pushbuttons.

I wasn't aware of this,
FWIW the '68 Accessories Brochure shows all but the FB with Chrome buttons?

The AM's were black buttoned, but I believe some if not all of the AM/FM models had chrome? Not certain on that, but I thought that was Or, maybe it was just the stereo AM/FM's? I haven't seen a blue faced black buttoned AM/FM yet. But they sure could exist, I just haven't seen one. The owners manual doesn't help much because it covers all 68 models in one book.

Only the stereo radios have chrome buttons but all the big cars even if just an am has the chrome buttons. I think over the years assured gets changed out is why your seeing them more often now.

There was a 68 am/fm on ebay a while back that had chrome buttons. The mount tab, dial light, etc was correct for the GTO. did other model cars use the same right side mount? I'll see if I can find it, maybe somebody can confirm from the part number what that one was?

My car came originally with the "non" stereo am/fm & a rear verb-phonic speaker. haven't even tried to find that yet & probably won't bother unless one falls on my lap...

EDIT: here's the one I saw. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1968-PONTIAC...p2047675.l2557

One more: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1968-Pontiac...p2047675.l2557

Anybody have a way to look up the part number?

This from a previous discussion:

From my research I have seen these different bezels:

AM/FM Stereo: Tone R<- Speaker ->F
AM/FM Mono: Tone AM FM
AM: Tone Select

I believe the black push buttons were on the AM radio and the chrome were for the AM/FM and AM/FM stereo. The outer push buttons for the Stereo model changed the dial from AM to FM. The AM/FM Mono changed the dial via the Right bezel.

The Tone/Select reproductions are everywhere, have even see the "R Speaker F". But no luck in tracking down the "AM FM" bezel. Guess I will just need to stumble upon an original.......

That makes sense Don. I thought all the GTO radios were black, I guess if they ordered the radio with FM that would be why some of them had the chrome buttons. Thanks, Marc.

I'm still searching for a correct radio for my 68. I bought an AM/FM for my GTO many years ago at a swap meet, only to realize recently that its actually for a 72 firebird or GTO. Never noticed the back face before. Even though that seems like it should be so obvious. Just never looked that close. The one I have has black push buttons & is in great shape, just not correct for my car. The search continues.......

Keep searching eBay. There are a few on there now, some must be made of unobtanium with the prices they are asking though.

Bought my AM/FM a few weeks ago, first time in 20 years the GTO has a working radio.

Which one do you need? AM, FM, Stereo, rear speaker option, etc.......

My car had the mono AM/FM with the rear verba-phonic speaker (whatever that is) I think I'm only going to install the dash speaker though, unless I can find something to put in the rear, but I am guessing in a convertible, it can't be heard that well anyway.

I saw the non-working unit on ebay right now. Probably what my car came with, but that one has peeling chrome buttons, & paint peeling off the bezel behind the glass. Hard to believe that thing is at $150 already & it doesn't even work!
