I am rewiring a '66 Lemans Convertible and have installed a new convertible top switch. According to the liturature, the power feed for the switch connects to a "junction block," on or near the firewall. It appears that, at least in cars with power seats/windows, the junction block was a circuit breaker - but its not clear if that was also the case in cars where only the top was power (some indication that the power top switch is wired directly to battery power).

So, I do not have power seats or windows - how do I hook up the switch? Do I need a fused junction block or circuit breaker? If anyone has the same car/configuration, I would appreciate you taking a look at your setup and providing advice.

On my 67 that does NOT have power windows or locks, the Power Top switch connects via a plug in the harness to a amall 2 post relay of some sort... mounted behind the Brake Booster. That then gets the HOT from the battery directly via an accessory wire from the postitive Battery clamp.

In the '67 manual it says that without power seats and windows it comes from the junction block as vidguy describes. With pw and seats it comes from a circuit breaker in the same location.
The 2 post rectangular device could probably be either; I've seen automotive circuit breakers in that style. It certainly wouldn't hurt to have a circuit breaker in either case.

Thanks for checking. I agree that it would probably be a good idea to provide some sort of protection for the power top pump - anyone care to take a guess at the #amp protection I should use? Also - I'm guessing some sort of fused junction block is readily available at my handy local automotive parts store???

Vidguy - can you tell if the junction block has a reset fuse or some other type of circuit breaker?

Thanks again.

The GM part no. is 1476675 for 68 thru 74. I would guess it would be in the 30 A range. The book doesn't say. I've seen the OEM style breaker in some store, don't recall which. There is also a style that fits in the fuse box; instead of threded studs for the connection it has formed cylindrical contacts that fit in the standard fuseholder sockets.

Sorry for not getting back sooner..
No it just looks like a simple relay or junction block... no fuse or switch visible... I'll check my wiring diagram...c if i can learn anything.

My wiring diagram just says ..."power feed to junction block on firewall.." ...

ok I went out and looked carefully with my flashlight..
on the black plastic itself on my junction block it says:
type 4110
and there is a V and an A under each of the 2 posts..
The A side also says AUX..
And more importantly, on the metal bracket that mounts it to the firewall it says
"40A" Im guessing that means 40 Amps.
If you want a pic I'll take one in the morning..

A pic would be great - I was going to go 30A - but will up it to 40A.

Thanks for all of your help . . . hope I can reciprocate someday.

I'll take a pic tonight and post it then..
No problem on the help! I love to help in the less involved ways I can... Pictures of metal things screwed into my firewall is easy

Piston ring fit or cylinder pressures... and I'm in the back of the class..

Glad to see a new face on the board anyhow and hope you enjoy it here..

Im in the Bay Area, Maybe we'll run into each other some day on I-5! :-)
